Job Description - Barista

Company: Chime Coffee

Location: Market Place, Wokingham

Contract: Part-time (17 hours per week)

Start Date: 1st June 2026

About Us

Chime Coffee is an independent hospitality business based in Wokingham Market, Berkshire. We strive to build genuine customer relationships, providing the best service while making incredible specialty coffee in Wokingham.

We are a multi-roaster café running three coffees simultaneously: our house espresso, a frequently changing guest coffee sourced from the UK's leading roasters, and a decaf. The name "Chime" is a nod to Wokingham's bell foundry that stood for over 300 years—a small tribute to the town’s heritage of craftsmanship and longevity. We're proud to be independent and local, serving top-tier espresso with genuine hospitality four days a week at Wokingham Market.

The Role

This isn't your standard behind-the-counter café job. We operate with a strict "hospitality first, coffee second" philosophy. You will be the face of Chime Coffee, responsible for delivering an outstanding customer experience while serving up the best coffee in town.

You’ll get the opportunity to work with state-of-the-art coffee equipment, including a Sanremo Cafe Racer, Mahlkönig E80 GbW and E65 GbW grinders, a Puqpress, and a Puq Navigator.

Because we operate an outdoor setup, this role involves manual labour. You will be helping with the daily cart setup, which includes lifting equipment like coffee grinders and gazebo weights. This will be required whether the sun is shining or the British weather is doing its worst. You will also be required to drive and help load/unload the company van to and from the market.

We are a growing business, so there are a lot of opportunities to grow with us. While this is a barista position, there will be opportunities to expand the role based on business needs. We will also provide barista training and further specialty coffee education for your development.

Key Responsibilities

  • Barista: Dialling in espresso daily, texturing milk flawlessly, and maintaining the highest standards to serve Wokingham's best coffee. Following SOPs across opening, drinks preparation, deep cleaning, and closing.
  • Customer Experience: Providing top-tier, genuine hospitality. Engaging with customers, building relationships, and utilising high interpersonal skills to make everybody feel welcome.
  • Manual Labour & Setup/Setdown: Loading and unloading the company van from our offsite storage to the market. Setting up and breaking down the gazebo and coffee cart. This requires lifting equipment up to 20kg at a time. You will be required to reset the cart for the following day. Replenishing stock and consumables.
  • Outdoor Operation: Working comfortably while standing outside in all weather conditions. Wearing suitable clothing/footwear for the weather.
  • Environment: Keeping the cart clean and welcoming, upholding all health and safety, food safety, allergen, and HACCP standards on every shift.
  • Non - Regular Work: From time to time Chime will want to operate at other events not at Wokingham Market, such as private hires and other events (e.g. May Fayre). You will be required to work these.
  • A genuine interest in serving customers and a passion for providing the highest levels of hospitality.
  • A valid driving licence is essential for this role. You will be required to drive the company van to and from the market.
  • Reliable, punctual, and comfortable with early morning starts and physical labour.
  • Be a nice person who works well with others and cares about the people they’re serving
  • Previous specialty coffee experience is not necessary, but a background in customer-facing roles would be highly welcomed.

Hours & Shift Pattern

  • Total Hours: 17 hours per week.
  • Standard Working Days: Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday.
  • Shift Lengths: Variable. Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays will be 4-hour shifts; Saturdays will be a 5-hour shift.
  • Shift Times: Weekday shifts will fall between 6:30 AM to 10:30 AM or 12:30 PM to 4:30 PM. Saturday Shifts will be 6:30 AM to 11:30am or 11:30 AM to 4:30 PM. Subject to business needs.

Remuneration & Benefits

We value our team and want to make sure you are looked after. Your compensation package includes:

Pay: £13.45 per hour. (Living Wage Employers)

Holiday: 20 days annual leave + bank holidays (pro-rated for part-time hours; bank holiday working may be required, but time in lieu will be given).

Pension: Company pension contribution.

Perks: Free drinks while on shift.

50% off our coffee when you aren't working.

30% off guest retail coffee.
