Board Medical Director

  • NHS Consultants Salary Scale: £96,963 - £128,841 per annum
  • Management Fee: £47,414 per annum
  • Performance Related Discretionary Points: £3,204 - £25,632

NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde is the largest health system and teaching Board in Scotland. With an annual budget of approximately £4.4 billion for the fiscal year 2023/24, it employs around 41,000 staff. The organisation provides a comprehensive range of services, including Acute Hospital, Maternity, Mental Health, and Community Care facilities. NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde collaborates with six Health and Social Care Partnerships covering Glasgow City, Renfrewshire, East Renfrewshire, Inverclyde, East Dunbartonshire, and West Dunbartonshire.

The Board Medical Director at NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde is a senior leadership position and Executive member of our Board and has a key role in ensuring that NHSGGC remains a leader in developing clinical governance, risk, and assurance systems that support the delivery of high-quality healthcare to patients.

As a member of the Executive Team, the post holder will be responsible for providing professional advice to the Board, leadership to the medical and dental professionals as well as leading the Board’s Pharmacy function across NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde.

This role reports directly to the Chief Executive and as a Board member, has a key role in providing professional and clinical leadership on a wide range of issues and having professional oversight of approximately 4000 medical and dental clinicians. The Medical Director also plays a lead role in patient safety and clinical governance.

The Board Medical Director is responsible for leading the delivery of The ‘Moving Forward Together’ strategy, providing a clear plan for change that will establish improvements in care and outcomes. The strategy seeks to transform systems of care and ensure that they are organised in the most effective way to provide, safe, effective, person-centred and sustainable care to meet the current and future needs of our population

The post holder will lead on the education and development of the medical workforce, both undergraduate and postgraduate. The Medical Director also leads our Board’s Research and Innovation Strategy.

We are looking for someone who will drive forward change and be an experienced leader in a major health system. If you are interested in joining our team you must be medically qualified and hold GMC Registration. You will also be an exceptional clinician with the credibility to deliver professional leadership in a complex environment. You must be able to evidence the ability to work at a local, regional and national level, influencing clinical policy and strategy and understanding politically sensitive environments.
