Role Overview
We are seeking a motivated and practical Estates Operative with a primary background in carpentry to join our Estates Team. The successful candidate will be responsible for carrying out a wide range of carpentry maintenance, repair, and improvement works across the college campus, helping to ensure a safe, functional, and welcoming environment for students, staff, and visitors.
In addition to carpentry duties, the role will involve undertaking basic maintenance tasks across other trades, including minor plumbing and electrical works. Formal qualifications in these areas are not required, although a willingness to learn and support the wider Estates team is essential.
This opportunity would suit an experienced Carpenter looking for a varied maintenance role, or a recently qualified/apprentice carpenter seeking their first permanent position within a supportive environment.
Key Responsibilities
Carry out a variety of carpentry repairs, maintenance, and installation work across the college. Repair and maintain doors, locks, windows, furniture, flooring, and other building fixtures. Assist with minor building works, refurbishments, and improvement projects. Undertake basic plumbing tasks such as replacing taps, unblocking sinks, and carrying out minor repairs. Undertake basic electrical tasks such as replacing light fittings, lamps, and other simple maintenance activities (within competency levels). Support the wider Estates team with general maintenance duties as required. Conduct routine inspections and identify maintenance issues. Ensure all work is completed safely and in accordance with health and safety procedures. Maintain accurate records of completed work and report any significant issues to management. Assist with room setups, moves, and other operational requirements across the campus.Person Specification
Essential
Experience or training in carpentry. Good practical skills and ability to carry out maintenance and repair work. Willingness to undertake a variety of maintenance tasks beyond core trade skills. Ability to work independently and as part of a team. Good problem-solving skills and attention to detail. Understanding of health and safety requirements within a maintenance environment. Positive, flexible, and customer-focused approach.Desirable
Experience working within a facilities, estates, maintenance, or building services environment. Basic knowledge of plumbing and electrical maintenance. Relevant carpentry qualification or completed apprenticeship. Experience working in an educational, public sector, or commercial environment.
