The Role
As a Casting Engineer, you'll be responsible for analysing, developing, and optimising casting processes from concept through to production. Working closely with Engineering, Pattern Shop, Sand Plant, Melting and Foundry teams, you'll help drive continuous improvement, reduce defects, improve yield, and support new product introductions.
Key Responsibilities
Build, run and interpret casting simulations to assess mould filling, solidification and defect risks. Analyse potential casting defects including shrinkage porosity, cold shuts, misruns, hot tears and inclusions, recommending effective corrective actions. Design and optimise gating, feeding and risering systems to improve casting quality, yield and cost efficiency. Work closely with Pattern Shop and Engineering teams to implement tooling and pattern modifications. Support new product introductions, quotation activities and manufacturability assessments. Liaise with customers and design engineers to provide technical feedback on casting design and production feasibility. Validate simulation results through production trials, X-ray inspections and foundry data. Produce technical reports, drawings and presentations to support engineering and production teams. Drive continuous improvement projects focused on scrap reduction, yield improvement and process optimisation. Maintain simulation databases and contribute to engineering best practices.What We're Looking For
Essential
Experience within a foundry, castings, metals or heavy manufacturing environment. Experience using MAGMASOFT/MAGMA5 or similar casting simulation software. Strong understanding of gating, feeding and risering design. Experience investigating casting defects and implementing process improvements. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills. Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills. Ability to interpret technical drawings and engineering data.Desirable
Degree or HND in Metallurgy, Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering or a related discipline. Experience working with ductile iron, grey iron, austenitic iron, stainless steel or similar alloys. CAD experience using software such as SolidWorks, Inventor or AutoCAD. Background in casting development, process engineering or foundry engineering.The Opportunity
