Job Description - Computational Biologist (Bioinformatics Pipeline)

About biomodal

Join the multiomic revolution! Over the last 20 years, genomic technologies have enabled significant discoveries that bring the promise of personalised medicine closer than ever before. But after two decades of research, it’s clear that genetic variation only tells part of the story – biology is dynamic and more complex than A, C, T, G. Already, the added information from a multiomic view of biology is yielding important insights into cancer, ageing, and neurological disease, and is poised to revolutionise how we understand health and disease beyond canonical variation in DNA.

biomodal is an omics-based life sciences technology and analytics company, delivering products that bring the dynamism of our ever-changing biology into focus. Our team is dedicated to developing the most advanced solutions to interrogate and understand the complex interplay of genomics and epigenomics.

We have launched our first products, the duet +modC and duet evoC solutions, with more in the pipeline, and are looking to grow and evolve our business accordingly.  This is an incredible opportunity to step into an exciting, early-stage company at the cutting edge of science with exceptional growth and market impact potential.

Multiomics is the future – come and join the biomodal team!

The Role

Within our computational technology teams, Bioinformatics Scientists are responsible for the design and implementation of the pipelines used to process data generated from our assays, which form the core of the software we share with our customers as well as being used to process data generated in our internal in-vitro product development. Bioinformatics Scientists directly support assay research and development through the design and analysis of experiments, conducting exploratory data analyses to understand phenomena observed in our experiments, and the adaptation / extension of our pipelines to support our various assay products.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Develop and maintain the suite of pipelines and bioinformatic processing modules required to process data generated by our in-vitro assay products

  2. Design and analyse experiments to understand, evaluate and optimise our in-vitro assay products

  3. Develop tools to support the visualisation, meta-analysis, and QC of the data generated using our assays

The Person

This is a diverse role and could suit someone with a strong background in biology who has moved into statistics, data analysis, and software development, or someone with a strong background in computing and statistics who has experience working with biological data.

Essential Skills

  • Advanced degree (MSc or PhD) or commensurate experience in bioinformatics or a quantitative subject such as computer science, physics, or statistics

  • Strong programming ability in Python or R and familiarity with libraries commonly used in the analysis of NGS data

  • Experience with bioinformatic workflow platforms such as Nextflow, Cromwell, or Snakemake

  • Experience analysing high throughput genomic datasets such as WGS, RNA-seq, ChIP-seq, or WGBS.

  • Familiarity with statistics, particularly methods commonly used in the analysis of ‘omics data

Nice to haves

  • Expertise in statistics, particularly for the design and analysis of experiments (including multi-factorial designs and response surface modelling)

  • Knowledge of software development best practices (version control, code review, pair programming, agile/scrum, testing, etc.)

  • Experience using and deploying systems on cloud platforms (such as GCP or AWS).

Behaviours

  • An entrepreneurial mindset with a desire to work in a fast-paced, commercially focused organisation.

  • Able to communicate complex topics appropriately to a range of different backgrounds and audiences.
