Job Description - Computational Fluid Dynamics Engineer

Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) Engineer

Location: Newcastle

Salary: £40,000 - £45,000 + Relocation Support

KO2's client is a Newcastle-based power electronics business, designing products deployed in demanding applications worldwide. As electrification accelerates, they're now looking to recruit a CFD Engineer to join their growing engineering function.

This is a rare chance to develop into a specialist. Rather than requiring deep CFD expertise from day one, KO2's client wants an engineer with a strong general engineering foundation who's keen to develop into a recognised expert in computational fluid dynamics, gas, and fluid analysis within power electronics.

The role exists because the current CFD Engineer has been promoted internally - proof of the genuine progression on offer. They joined with an aerospace background and only brief CFD exposure during their studies, and the business invested in developing that into deep expertise. They're happy to do the same again.

You'll become the company's go-to expert on how their products perform in the field from a fluid dynamics perspective - assessing real-world performance against spec, diagnosing issues, and working cross-functionally with mechanical, electrical, and power electronics engineers to resolve them, whether through design changes or circuitry adjustments.

What You'll Be Doing

Carrying out CFD and thermal analysis on electrical machines, power electronic drives and power supplies, both in development and once deployed in the field
Using CFD and FEA as primary tools to evaluate temperature profiles, cooling performance and overall design specification against expected performance
Identifying where products are underperforming against spec and diagnosing the root cause from a fluid and gas dynamics perspective
Collaborating with mechanical, electrical and power electronics engineers to design and implement fixes, ranging from physical design changes (e.g. additional cooling or fan provision) to circuitry-level modifications
Developing and enhancing the CFD and thermal design tools and methodologies used across the engineering function
Supporting fault analysis, root cause investigation and corrective action work, including DFMEA processes
Producing clear documentation covering cooling methodology, test and qualification processes, and manufacturing work instructions
Working within the company's quality framework (ISO 9001) and contributing to a strong safety cultureWhat KO2's Client Is Looking For

This is the most important part: you do not need to be a CFD expert already. You may have touched on fluid dynamics briefly during your studies, or not studied it in any real depth at all. What matters far more is a genuine grounding in engineering principles and a real curiosity about this specialist field.

A relevant engineering degree is required, but KO2's client is open-minded about which discipline. Strong fits include:

Mechanical Engineering
Aerospace or Aeronautical Engineering
Automotive Engineering
Manufacturing or Industrial Engineering
Mechatronics EngineeringIf your degree sits outside this list but is still a recognised engineering discipline, you are still very much encouraged to apply. The client cares far more about your engineering mindset, problem-solving ability and enthusiasm to specialise than which exact course is on your CV.

Alongside this, they're looking for someone who:

Has a genuine interest in fluid dynamics, thermal performance or cooling systems, even if this hasn't yet translated into deep hands-on experience
Enjoys getting into the detail of why something is or isn't performing as expected
Is comfortable collaborating across disciplines, working closely with mechanical, electrical and power electronics engineers
Wants to build a long-term career as a specialist in a genuinely niche and highly sought-after area of engineeringWhy This Role

A proven path to specialism. The person before you walked this exact path, joining with general engineering knowledge and limited CFD exposure, and is now an internally promoted CFD expert.
Sector relevance. Power electronics and electrification are among the most in-demand areas in engineering today, and this experience will only become more valuable.
