Job Description - Consumer Affairs Editor

About The Role

The Consumer Affairs Editor is a new role on the Telegraph Money team. This is an opportunity to spearhead a new editorial specialism and set the news agenda with original and investigative consumer journalism.

You will be expected to source exclusives that can lead the website and splash the newspaper, identify trends, conduct investigations, lead campaigns and write analysis, features and long reads to ensure that The Telegraph’s consumer affairs coverage is of the highest standard.

The ideal candidate will be full of ideas, energy and determination, and able to think of fresh ways to take on key topics of interest.

You will report to the Money Editor, manage the role of Consumer Affairs Correspondent and work closely with other departments including News and Data.

Key Responsibilities

  • Drive original consumer journalism and generate exclusive, agenda-setting stories
  • Spot trends and identify sector developments before they are widely reported
  • Have ideas for campaigns and investigations on topics that affect Telegraph readers
  • Maintain a strong awareness across the news agenda, with ideas on how to take stories on
  • Manage the Consumer Affairs Correspondent and ensure the Telegraph’s consumer coverage is of the highest quality
  • Produce stories that are accurate, engaging and legally compliant
  • Build and maintain a strong network of relevant contacts
  • Use audience analytics to inform and improve idea generation and presentation
  • Play an integral role in what is a stable, happy and ambitious team

Key Skills

  • Proven experience of reporting within a national newsroom or equivalent
  • Finely tuned journalistic instincts that mean you can spot a story and know how to craft compelling stories
  • Experience of planning and producing agenda-setting content
  • An ability to write clear, accurate copy as well as numerate
  • A proven ability to develop sources and contacts
  • Highly organised and able to work on multiple projects simultaneously while effectively prioritising different tasks
  • A strong verbal communicator, who is able to explain stories succinctly and clearly to editors
  • News-aware and alive to the interests of our audience
  • Full of original ideas, energetic and enthusiastic

Desirable skills

  • Knowledgeable about key personal finance topics and experience of consumer journalism
  • Experienced in digital publishing
  • Comfortable with the use of analytics
