The Curriculum Leader for English (CLE) plays a vital role in achieving outstanding student outcomes, ensuring high-quality teaching and learning, and driving curriculum innovation. This position fosters collaborative practice within the International Study Centre at the University of Strathclyde, as well as across the wider Study Group network and the University itself.
As the lead for key organisational aspects of the Academic English Skills (AES) team, the CLE supports effective teaching delivery and promotes best practices. In partnership with the Regional Head of English Curriculum (RHEC), the CLE ensures academic quality and contributes to curriculum enhancement through the implementation of innovative teaching strategies.
Reporting directly to the RHEC, the CLE works closely with senior colleagues both within and outside the Centre and is responsible for achieving agreed student progression rates to the University. The role also involves contributing to the academic line management of AES teaching staff and overseeing student performance and progression in the subject area.
The role includes a teaching commitment averaging 15 hours per week.
ABOUT THE ROLE
Support academic oversight of AES delivery, including timetabling, assessment processes, and performance monitoring.
Provide support and constructive feedback to AES tutors and coordinate teaching cover where needed.
Assist the RHEC in the recruitment and appointment of AES teaching staff.
Represent the RHEC and the Centre in meetings and events both internally and externally, including within the partner university.
Contribute to Centre senior management meetings to support strategic planning and resource management.
Collaborate with Student Outcomes teams, progression coaches, and other stakeholders to guide and support student development.
Monitor student engagement and outcomes, implementing effective interventions where appropriate in collaboration with the RHEC.
Ensure consistency and high standards across AES provision; facilitate cross-departmental sharing of best practices and innovation.
Support the ongoing development and diversification of AES programmes through annual review and academic planning.
Prepare reports, analysis, and evaluations for internal and external review processes as requested by the RHEC.
Oversee AES delivery in alignment with the Study Group Learning, Teaching and Assessment (LTA) Strategy.
Undertake any additional responsibilities as directed by the RHEC.
ABOUT YOU
A bachelor’s degree in a relevant subject (Master’s degree or higher is preferred).
Recognised teaching qualification (desirable).
Experience teaching in post-16 education, UK pathway programmes, or higher education.
Demonstrated leadership experience with evidence of impact.
Skilled in delivering constructive performance feedback to colleagues with measurable improvement outcomes.
Strong organisational skills, with the ability to delegate, manage workloads, and meet deadlines effectively.
Experience supporting international students and understanding their unique educational needs.
Proficient in data interpretation, quality assurance, and academic reporting.
Experience designing or supporting curriculum development initiatives.
Competency in the use of Virtual Learning Environments (VLEs).
