Job Description - Data Governance Lead

Why Smart?

Working at Smartgroup offers more than a job. It is a dynamic workplace that matches the enthusiasm for the work you do and ambition for an exciting fast-paced career. We have all been hired for a purpose and a reason.

Every day you will be part of a team that helps support fellow Australians - many working in essential services, corporates, government, and not-for-profits - to take home more money in their pay packets.

Do you have what it takes to become a Data Governance Lead?

This is a career-defining role for a hands-on Data Governance leader who thrives in ambiguity and knows how to drive real outcomes — not just frameworks.

You will step into a team undergoing change, uplift capability, continue building credibility with stakeholders, and deliver pragmatic, tangible outcomes that demonstrate why data governance matters.

This role suits someone who combines strong technical depth with people leadership, can confidently challenge senior stakeholders, and is comfortable rolling up their sleeves to get things done.

What you’ll do

  • Own and deliver a Data Governance & Management roadmap with tangible, measurable outcomes

  • Drive adoption of data governance

  • Partner with senior stakeholders to embed data ownership and stewardship

  • Deliver pragmatic governance standards, processes and data artefacts (glossary, dictionary, lineage, CDEs)

  • Improve data quality through hands-on profiling, remediation and controls

  • Report on governance and data quality metrics to senior leadership and board forums

What we’re looking for

  • 5+ years’ experience across multiple data management disciplines (Data Governance, Data Quality, Data Risk, Data Modelling)

  • Hands-on experience implementing data governance tools and catalogues

  • Technical experience with: Azure Purview, Databricks (Unity Catalog), SQL, Data catalogues, data quality and metadata management tools

  • Strong people leadership experience

  • Excellent stakeholder management skills with the confidence to challenge and influence

  • A pragmatic, outcomes-driven mindset — comfortable being hands-on

  • Experience working in Agile delivery environments

What’s in it for you?

Smart team members enjoy a range of benefits designed to support flexibility, wellbeing, reward, and growth:

  • Smart Leave, an additional week of leave each year

  • Free lunch every week

  • Up to 20 weeks Paid Parental Leave with superannuation contributions and a Return-to-Work Bonus

  • Make a Difference Days – paid days off to volunteer for the community and environment

  • Discounted retail vouchers

  • Salary packaging and novated leasing benefits (of course!)

  • Free flu vaccinations

  • Employee Share Plan

Grow with Purpose

At Smart, we’re driven by purpose and performance. We support individual and team growth via varied learning opportunities, open communication, and leaders who work to get the basics right – quality and regular one to ones, clear goals and success metrics, and growth conversations.
