We are now looking for a deputy audience editor to join our editorial team! In this role you’ll focus on expanding the reach of the Guardian’s journalism to the widest and most relevant audiences.

 

You’ll assist the head of audience development in maximising the reach, engagement and impact of the Guardian’s journalism. You’ll support the development of strategies to engage audiences on the Guardian’s own platform and on external platforms. You’ll work in the heart of the newsroom, helping shape the Guardian’s journalism to reach and engage new and diverse audiences.

 

This is a 12-month fixed-term contract or staff secondment, 9-day fortnight working pattern with regular rotated weekend, early and late shifts.

 

About the role

  • Ensure the Guardian’s journalism reaches the broadest, most relevant audience
  • Guide editorial teams on presentation and digital best practice, optimising article presentation, including headlines, main images etc. to maximise engaged reach -, and training other Guardian colleagues on effective digital optimisation
  • Monitor day-to-day trends across the internet, identifying editorial opportunities that fit theguardian.com's remit and pass them on to relevant editors
  • Stay up-to-date on all new search, social and aggregator platform developments to identify future opportunities or issues
  • Support the identification of emerging platforms and the development of editorial and business strategies
  • Monitor and analyse performance in major search engines, Google Discover, Google News and other major referrers and use analytics software to track search and referral traffic throughout the day
  • Monitor analytics and report on performance, best practice, and competitive set to editorial staff informally, during the morning news meeting, via email and through other channels
  • Help define and continually update best practice for digital optimisation with reference to the broader industry and Guardian strategy

 

About you

  • Excellent knowledge of digital news publishing, SEO, social media, platform landscape and the web
  • Experience of news production and content management systems
  • Extensive experience of using web analytics tools to analyse performance
  • Ideally an interest in diverse communities and ways to reach them - demonstrable experience in identifying, engaging, and growing relationships with underrepresented audiences would be a distinct advantage
  • Solid subbing experience an advantage
  • Experience of working in a busy newsroom and presenting to senior editors
  • A knowledge of the Guardian’s editorial standards and values, and how to safeguard them
  • Ideally, you’ll have a demonstrable ability to bring a diverse perspective to this role

We operate in a hybrid environment working 3 days a week from our offices in Kings Cross and 2 days a week remotely.
