The successful candidate will be responsible for taking ideas, measurements, and requirements through to practical designs, manufacturing drawings, assemblies, and workshop support.
You will be involved in the design and development of specialist machinery used within the glass industry, working closely with our workshop, production team, and customers to turn requirements into practical, manufacturable designs.
Key responsibilities
The successful candidate will be responsible for:
* Producing detailed 2D and 3D CAD drawings for machinery, frames, assemblies, guards, brackets, and fabricated components.
* Designing mechanical parts and assemblies suitable for manufacture.
* Creating manufacturing drawings, layouts, and bills of materials.
* Working with the workshop team to support fabrication, machining, assembly, and installation.
* Modifying and improving existing machinery designs.
* Taking measurements from existing equipment and producing accurate drawings.
* Supporting bespoke customer projects from concept through to manufacture.
* Ensuring designs are practical, safe, cost-effective, and suitable for the glass machinery environment.
Skills and experience required
We are looking for someone with:
* Experience as a Design Engineer, Mechanical Design Engineer, CAD Designer, Draughtsperson, or similar.
* Strong ability to produce accurate technical drawings.
* Experience using CAD software such as SolidWorks, Inventor, AutoCAD, Fusion 360, or similar.
* Good understanding of mechanical engineering and manufacturing processes.
* Knowledge of sheet metal, fabrication, machined parts, bearings, shafts, motors, drives, or pneumatic systems would be useful.
* Ability to work from sketches, measurements, existing machines, or customer requirements.
* Good attention to detail and a practical approach to design.
* Ability to communicate with workshop and production teams.
Desirable experience
Experience in any of the following would be advantageous:
* Machinery design.
* Automation or special-purpose machinery.
* Glass processing machinery.
* Conveyor systems.
* Fabrication and welded structures.
* Pneumatics, hydraulics, or motor-driven mechanisms.
* CE/UKCA machinery safety awareness.
Candidate profile
This role would suit a practical design engineer who is comfortable working in a hands-on manufacturing environment. We need someone who can not only draw components but also understand how they will be made, assembled, installed, and maintained.
