Design Engineer

Salary: £50,000–£60,000 DOE
Bonus: 10% annual bonus
Location: Predominantly remote, with occasional attendance at a Reading office (typically fortnightly/monthly)

THE ROLE

An established technical engineering organisation is looking for Design Engineers to join its growing design function.

Opportunities are available for engineers with either an electrical or mechanical focus, with experience in fire detection, fire suppression, and data centre environments particularly relevant.

You will be responsible for delivering technical design solutions from concept through to completion, producing accurate drawings, calculations, technical submissions, and project documentation while working closely with project, commercial, sales, operations, and service teams.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Lead design activities including layouts, calculations, schematics, technical submissions, and design documentation.
Produce compliant engineering designs in line with relevant BS, EN, NFPA, and client requirements.
Prepare drawings, calculations, specifications, O&M manuals, and as-built documentation.
Develop technical build budgets and support procurement and mobilisation.
Coordinate internal design resources and external consultants/CAD technicians.
Provide technical support during project delivery, installation, and commissioning.
Support sales and estimating teams with tenders, proposals, and client meetings.
Maintain accurate design records and ensure alignment with contractual and technical requirements.
Keep up to date with industry, supplier, and product developments.
Contribute to continuous improvement, technical innovation, and knowledge sharing.

EXPERIENCE & SKILLS

Experience in a design or engineering role within construction, building services, fire protection, or critical infrastructure.
Electrical or mechanical design experience.
Experience with fire detection and/or fire suppression systems.
Experience within data centres or other critical infrastructure environments.
Strong knowledge of AutoCAD, Revit, or similar CAD software.
Experience producing technical drawings, calculations, schematics, and submissions.
Understanding of relevant standards, such as BS 5839, BS 5266, BS 7671, EN and NFPA standards.
Strong attention to detail and ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines.
Good communication skills and confidence working with technical and non-technical stakeholders.
Client-facing experience would be advantageous.
Experience supporting or mentoring junior designers is desirable.

QUALIFICATIONS

HNC/HND or Degree in Building Services, Electrical, Mechanical Engineering, or a related discipline (Essential).
AutoCAD and/or Revit proficiency (Essential).
Relevant fire industry qualifications, such as FIA Units or BS 5839, (Desirable).
IOSH or equivalent health & safety training (Desirable).
Full UK driving licence (Essential).
Right to work in the UK (Essential).
