Job Description - Director of bioinformatics and computational biology

Director of Bioinformatics and Computational Biology This position is a Hybrid position with office located in the South of the UK.

Position Summary: The Director of Bioinformatics and Computational Biology will lead a team of computational biologists and data scientists, focusing on cutting-edge statistical learning algorithms and probabilistic modelling.

The role involves strategic input on positioning and differentiation of new technologies and leading development through to clinical validation and product launch.

This position reports to the Chief Technology Officer and influences the company's strategic technological direction.

Primary Responsibilities: Leadership & Strategy: Lead the bioinformatics and data science team towards achieving critical innovation aligned with strategic goals.

Foster a culture of collaboration, excellence, continuous learning, and constructive feedback among the team members.

Ensure all projects have clear, well-motivated, measurable goals aligned with leadership’s long-term objectives.

Research & Development: Lead substantial method development projects, contributing to the development of advanced mathematical constructs, particularly in probabilistic modelling.

Work closely with medical experts and integrate domain knowledge to drive the development and improvement of analytical methodologies.

Engage in rigorous data-driven planning, risk and benefits assessment, and goal-setting to ensure successful execution of analytics projects.

Innovation & Execution: Drive the development and publication of methodological innovations that contribute to core products and support extending the application of core technology.

Communication & Collaboration: Develop partnerships across teams and departments, both internally and externally.

Engage actively with multiple departments, playing a catalytic role at the intersection of bioinformatics, machine learning, and domain-specific challenges.

Present findings, share knowledge, and communicate complex ideas effectively to various stakeholders.

Maintain a track record of publications, talks, and posters, promoting and developing team members to demonstrate leadership in the ongoing communication of results.

Engage in mentorship, fostering the growth of individual team members and nurturing a collaborative environment.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Comprehensive understanding of applications of NGS, and technical and clinical limitations.

Strong background in computational biology, oncology, and molecular biology within industry commercial Diagnostic, Genomic, or Biopharma Industry.

Scientific software development experience (Python, MATLAB, C, C++, or R).

Familiarity with standard software engineering tools (Jira, Git Lab/Hub, CI/CD).

Understanding of mathematical modeling and statistical analysis of data.

Experience using bioinformatics workflow management systems and cloud-based solutions.

Experience developing molecular biology workflows.

Ph. D.

in Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, Genomics, or a related field.

7+ years of industry experience leading the development of computational and analytical methods.

3+ years of experience leading a team of scientists and computational biologists.

Proven track record of leadership in bioinformatics.

Demonstrated experience in leading and developing multidisciplinary teams.
