Job Description - Educational Psychologist


3 Month Contract with A Local Authority







Job Purpose

The Educational Psychologist will provide high-quality psychological advice, assessment, and consultation services to support children and young people with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND). Working within Hackney’s Education Service, the postholder will contribute to improving outcomes for children and young people aged 0–25 by applying psychological principles to assessment, intervention, and service development.

The role will involve working closely with children, families, schools, education settings, and multi-agency partners to promote inclusion, emotional well-being, educational achievement, and positive life outcomes. The postholder will play a key role in delivering statutory Educational Psychology advice for Education, Health and Care Needs Assessments (EHCNA) within required timescales.













Key Responsibilities



  • Complete high-quality psychological assessments and provide written advice for Education, Health and Care Needs Assessments (EHCNA) within statutory deadlines.

  • Apply a range of psychological theories, frameworks, and evidence-based approaches to support children and young people with SEND.

  • Provide consultation and advice to schools, educational settings, parents, carers, and professionals regarding learning, behaviour, emotional well-being, and inclusion.

  • Work directly with children and young people aged 0–25 to identify strengths, needs, and appropriate interventions.

  • Support educational settings in developing inclusive practices and effective support strategies for children and young people with additional needs.

  • Deliver training, workshops, supervision, and capacity-building activities to school staff and other professionals.

  • Contribute to early intervention and preventative approaches that promote positive educational and developmental outcomes.

  • Work collaboratively within multidisciplinary teams, including education, health, social care, and other partner agencies.

  • Maintain accurate assessment records, reports, and case notes in accordance with professional standards and organisational procedures.

  • Provide clear, accessible, and practical psychological recommendations that support decision-making and effective intervention planning.

  • Ensure compliance with relevant legislation, statutory guidance, professional standards, and safeguarding responsibilities.

  • Contribute to service development initiatives and support the continuous improvement of Educational Psychology services.









Requirements

Essential



  • Doctorate or Master’s degree in Educational Psychology.

  • Registration as a Practitioner Psychologist with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC).

  • Experience completing psychological assessments and statutory advice for Education, Health and Care Needs Assessments (EHCNA).

  • Knowledge of SEND legislation, educational psychology practice, and relevant statutory frameworks.

  • Experience providing consultation, assessment, and intervention within educational settings.

  • Strong understanding of child development, learning, emotional well-being, and inclusion.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to present complex psychological information clearly and effectively.

  • Ability to build positive working relationships with children, families, schools, and multidisciplinary professionals.

  • Strong analytical, assessment, and problem-solving skills.

  • Ability to manage a varied caseload and meet statutory deadlines.

  • Commitment to improving outcomes for vulnerable children and young people.

Desirable



  • Experience working within a local authority Educational Psychology Service.

  • Experience delivering training, supervision, or workforce development activities.

  • Knowledge of trauma-informed practice and emotionally based school avoidance (EBSA).

  • Experience contributing to service development, research, or project work.

  • Understanding of social justice and inclusive practice within diverse communities.









Additional Information

Location: Hackney

Assessment Time: Typically 2 days work per assessment

Payments: Bi-Weekly Payments Available
