About the role

As Engineering Director, you'll empower and mentor our engineering teams, unify technical and product strategies with the Product Team, and enhance and elevate our engineering community through effective communication and collaboration. You will champion process excellence, incident preparedness, and continuous improvement, while maintaining a forward-looking technical vision.

One of your key responsibilities will involve enhancing the technical outputs of our engineering teams. By implementing appropriate practices to foster a fast-paced culture of innovation, you will ensure that our technology can support future organisational growth and success.

In collaboration with the CTO, you will be instrumental in setting the strategic direction for Confused.com’s engineering initiatives. Your ability to anticipate market trends, identify growth opportunities, and align technical strategies with business objectives will be crucial to our continued success.

What you’ll be doing: 

People:

• Empower and Mentor: Guide and develop staff engineers and managers, fostering an environment of continuous learning and innovation.
• Strategic Partnership: Collaborate with the product function to align technical and product strategies.
• Community Enhancement: Contribute to activities that bolster career development, knowledge sharing, and collaboration.
• Transparent Communication: Foster a collaborative culture through clear and effective communication.

Process:

• Process Excellence: Implement new standards to boost efficiency and scalability.
• Incident Preparedness: Ensure robust response protocols and root cause analysis capabilities.
• Continuous Improvement: Lead rituals and initiatives that foster improvement and community.

Technology:

• Technical Vision: Define and oversee the execution of a technical strategy that supports business objectives.
• Delivery: Ensure high-quality delivery of major technical initiatives.
• Trend Integration: Stay abreast of industry trends and advocate for relevant technological advances.
• Technical Integrations: Manage third-party technical integrations to ensure alignment with our strategy.
• Resource Advocacy: Advocate for necessary resources and manage budgets to achieve technical goals.

What you'll bring to the role:

• Excellent, experience-based understanding of how modern product development teams work.
  Proven experience helping teams become best in class across people, process and technology.
• Proven experience in a senior engineering leadership role.
• Strong track record of empowering and mentoring engineering teams.
• Excellent collaboration skills with a focus on strategic alignment.
• Proficiency in articulating and implementing process improvements.
• Ability to define and execute a forward-looking technical vision, and strategies to guide decision-making towards that vision
• Strong communication and conflict resolution skills.
