Engineering Manager

Location - Remote – UK or Europe

Salary - £90,000 – £110,000 Base Salary + Bonus + Equity

Company Overview

Our client is a rapidly growing fintech SaaS business transforming how finance teams manage Accounts Receivable, Accounts Payable, Reconciliation, Cash Flow, Collections and broader financial operations.

Their platform combines automation, payments infrastructure, enterprise-grade integrations and artificial intelligence to help finance teams reduce manual effort, improve working capital and gain greater visibility across their financial operations.

As the business continues to scale, significant investment is being made into next-generation AI capabilities and Agentic AI technologies. Their vision extends beyond workflow automation, creating intelligent systems capable of reasoning, orchestrating actions and supporting finance teams through increasingly autonomous workflows.

Engineering sits at the heart of this journey, making this an exciting opportunity for a technical leader who wants to help build products at the intersection of fintech, automation and artificial intelligence.

Role Summary

This is an opportunity for an experienced Engineering Manager to join a high-growth fintech startup and play a critical role in scaling both the engineering organisation and the platform itself.

Reporting directly to the CTO and Co-Founder, you will lead a distributed engineering team of approximately 14 engineers spanning Frontend, Backend and Full Stack disciplines.

This is a people-first engineering leadership role. While the successful candidate will possess strong technical credibility and a deep understanding of modern software engineering practices, they will not be expected to contribute code as part of their day-to-day responsibilities.

Instead, your focus will be on developing engineers, improving delivery processes, driving engineering excellence, supporting technical decision-making and ensuring the team remains aligned with business objectives.

You will act as a trusted partner to the CTO, helping scale the engineering function while maintaining high standards of quality, collaboration, delivery and technical execution.

The ideal candidate will have progressed through a strong engineering background, with particular strength in backend technologies, before moving into technical leadership. Whilst hands-on coding is not required, you must possess the technical depth and credibility to review code, challenge architectural decisions, mentor senior engineers and support technical discussions across both backend and frontend teams.

This role is particularly well suited to an Engineering Lead, Lead Engineer, Staff Engineer or Principal Engineer who has already begun taking ownership of people management and is looking to step into a larger engineering leadership role.

Key Responsibilities

Engineering Leadership

  • Lead, mentor and develop a distributed engineering team of approximately 14 engineers.
  • Create and maintain a high-performance engineering culture built around accountability, ownership and continuous improvement.
  • Support engineers with career development, performance management and coaching.
  • Foster collaboration across engineering, product and commercial teams.
  • Build an environment where engineers can perform at their highest level.

Delivery & Execution

  • Partner closely with the CTO to execute the engineering roadmap.
  • Drive engineering planning, delivery processes and execution standards.
  • Ensure projects are delivered on time and to a high standard.
  • Identify delivery risks and remove blockers across teams.
  • Improve engineering effectiveness through process optimisation and operational improvements.

Technical Leadership

  • Provide technical leadership and guidance across Frontend, Backend and Full Stack teams.
  • Review architecture decisions and engineering approaches to ensure scalability, maintainability and long-term success.
  • Support senior engineers through mentoring, technical coaching and review processes.
  • Establish and maintain engineering standards, development practices and quality controls.
  • Participate in code reviews from a leadership and quality perspective.
  • Act as a technical sounding board for complex engineering challenges.
  • Collaborate with technical leads and senior engineers to drive effective decision making.

Team Growth

  • Support hiring efforts and scaling of the engineering organisation.
  • Assist with interview processes and technical assessments.
  • Help define future team structures and engineering career pathways.
  • Ensure successful onboarding and integration of new hires.

Innovation & AI

  • Support the delivery of AI-powered product initiatives.
  • Collaborate with leadership on the evolution of Agentic AI capabilities across the platform.
  • Identify opportunities where AI and intelligent automation can improve customer outcomes.
  • Help ensure engineering teams remain aligned with emerging technologies and industry best practices.

Ideal Candidate Profile

Experience & Expertise

  • Proven experience leading engineering teams within SaaS, fintech or high-growth technology businesses.
  • Experience managing multidisciplinary engineering teams across Frontend, Backend and Full Stack functions.
  • Strong software engineering background with previous hands-on development experience.
  • Experience progressing through roles such as Senior Engineer, Lead Engineer, Staff Engineer, Principal Engineer or Engineering Lead.
  • Demonstrated success transitioning from technical leadership into people leadership.
  • Experience managing engineering teams of 10+ engineers.
  • Strong understanding of modern software architecture and engineering best practices.
  • Experience working closely with CTOs, founders and senior leadership teams.
  • Experience operating successfully within startup or scale-up environments.
  • Strong understanding of agile software development methodologies.

Direct experience is not essential, however a genuine interest in AI and the future of intelligent software is highly desirable.
