Job Description - English Lecturer

English Lecturers (GCSE & Functional Skills)

?? Location: West London
?? Type: x1 Full-Time, x2 Part-Time (Permanent)
?? Salary: £32,000 – £45,000 per annum (pro rata for part-time)

We are currently recruiting for three English Lecturers to join a further education provider in West London. These permanent roles include one full-time position and two part-time positions, teaching GCSE and Functional Skills English. We’re looking for dedicated professionals with a passion for helping learners achieve their full potential.

Main Purpose of the Role
To deliver high-quality teaching of English at GCSE and/or Functional Skills level, supporting a diverse range of students in achieving their qualifications and progressing in their academic or professional journeys.

Key ResponsibilitiesProgramme Design and Delivery
  • Deliver dynamic and engaging lessons across English programmes, including GCSE and Functional Skills.
  • Develop comprehensive schemes of work, lesson plans, and high-quality teaching resources.
  • Use a variety of assessment methods (formative and summative) to monitor student progress and set clear targets for improvement.
  • Provide timely, constructive feedback, both verbal and written.
  • Incorporate IT and e-learning tools to enhance curriculum delivery.
  • Ensure students engage with all elements of their study programmes, including English, maths, and work experience.
Student Support and Induction
  • Lead and contribute to student inductions and ensure course handbooks and materials are up to date.
  • Conduct regular academic reviews and refer students to appropriate support services when needed.
  • Maintain accurate records of progress, attendance, and engagement.
  • Prepare students for progression into further education, training, or employment.
Recruitment and Engagement
  • Participate in open events and promotional activities to attract new learners.
  • Provide clear, accurate information to prospective students and their families.
  • Support interviews and contribute to the admissions process.
  • Assist in the development of marketing content and course information materials.
Curriculum Management and Quality
  • Take a lead on specific courses as directed by line managers.
  • Attend team meetings and contribute to departmental planning and improvement.
  • Complete all necessary administrative tasks including registers, reports, and progress records.
  • Engage in curriculum development and course evaluation activities.
  • Contribute to quality assurance processes, including feedback collection and self-assessment reporting.
Professional Responsibilities
  • Participate in ongoing professional development and maintain up-to-date knowledge of subject matter and teaching practice.
  • Support new and existing staff through mentoring and collaborative working.
  • Promote equality, diversity, and inclusion across all learning environments.
  • Comply with all college policies, including Health & Safety, Safeguarding, and GDPR.
Safeguarding
  • Demonstrate a thorough understanding of safeguarding procedures and legislation.
  • Promote the wellbeing and safety of children and vulnerable adults at all times.
Person SpecificationEssential:
  • A degree in English or a closely related subject.
  • A recognised teaching qualification (or willingness to work towards one).
  • Experience delivering GCSE and/or Functional Skills English.
  • Strong interpersonal, organisational, and digital literacy skills.
  • A commitment to inclusive education and student success.
Desirable:
  • Experience within the further education or post-16 education sector.
  • Knowledge of curriculum development and quality assurance processes.
