The Opportunity

At Rolls-Royce SMR, we’re shaping the future of clean energy. We’re looking for an Environment Technical Advisor  / Specialist with experience of delivering BAT assessments to help us design and deliver a next-generation nuclear technology that protects both people and the environment.

We need you to play a key role in developing our integrated Environment, Safety, Security and Safeguards (E3S) case—ensuring our designs meet the highest environmental standards and that the design of the RR SMR represents BAT. 

What you’ll be doing

We need you to:

  • Lead and contribute to environmental assessments that support design justification and regulatory submissions
  • Support the development of BAT cases for design and site-specific variations
  • Work closely with engineering teams to ensure environmental considerations are embedded in design decisions
  • Participate in optioneering and HAZOP workshops to influence safe and sustainable design outcomes
  • Provide expert advice on environmental protection and regulatory requirements
  • Represent the project in technical reviews and engage with external stakeholders, including regulators
  • Support training and capability development across environmental topics

What we’re looking for

We know there’s no perfect candidate. If you meet around 75% of the requirements, we’d still love to hear from you

You’ll bring:

  • A degree (or equivalent experience) in Environmental Science, Engineering, Chemistry or a related discipline
  • Chartered status, or you’re working towards it
  • Experience within the UK environmental regulatory framework (ideally nuclear or highly regulated industries)
  • Strong experience producing BAT assessments or environmental safety cases
  • Confidence working in multidisciplinary engineering teams
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to influence a range of stakeholders

It would be great if you also have:

  • Knowledge of nuclear plant design (e.g. PWR)
  • Experience supporting Environmental Impact Assessments or permitting

Salary and Benefits

We offer:

  • £50,650 - £66,500 salary
  • £2,200 flexible benefits allowance
  • 12.5% bonus opportunity

  • £250 new joiner payment

Due to the safety regulations within the nuclear industry, applicants will be required to participate in additional screening. These are:


•    Obtaining Baseline Personnel Security Standard (BPSS) clearance
•    Satisfactory completion of a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check
•    Satisfactory completion of a basic financial probity check
