Location: Hybrid – 3 days per week at MOD Abbey Wood, Bristol, 1 day per week at General Dynamics, Merthyr Tydfil, and 1 day working from home

Rate: Up to £550/day

IR35 status: Inside IR35

Contract dates: ASAP to 31/03/2027

Overview

Our customer, a large defence organisation, is seeking an experienced Environmental Engineer to provide environmental engineering support across the AJAX programme.

The role will ensure environmental management processes, legislative compliance and AEMS/POEMS/SEMS (Unified/Land/Acquisition) requirements are effectively implemented. It will lead environmental risk and assurance activities, manage deltas between contracted standards/regulatory requirements and current requirements, support critical air quality and toxicity testing, and produce the environmental documentation and evidence required to enable safe and compliant programme delivery.

Team Context

The AJAX Programme sits within the National Armaments Director Group (NAD) and is delivered as part of the Land Combat Vehicles 2 Portfolio.

The AJAX team comprises several pillars representing stages in the project lifecycle. This role sits within the In-Service Pillar, which is responsible for engineering and support activity for the in-service AJAX fleet.

Key Responsibilities

Develop and maintain AJAX Environmental Management and governance arrangements

  • Environmental Management System (EMS), Environmental Management Plans, Environmental Cases, governance arrangements, assurance, Acquisition Environmental Control System, environmental procedures and supporting programme documentation.

Lead environmental compliance and assurance activity

  • Legislative and policy compliance assessments, compliance records, audit evidence, assurance reports and recommendations to maintain alignment with MOD/DE&S requirements.
  • Deliver environmental evidence in support of programme decision-making across the CADMID lifecycle.

Manage environmental risks, impacts and hazardous materials

  • Environmental risk assessments, hazard logs, environmental impact analyses, hazardous materials registers and mitigation/risk-reduction plans.

Support air quality, toxicity and human-in-the-loop testing

  • Environmental test plans, assessment reports, technical recommendations and environmental evidence to support safety and assurance decisions.

Produce, review and endorse Environmental Cases, AEMP deliverables and supporting environmental evidence

  • Environmental Case Reports, Environmental Impact Assessments, Environmental Management Plans and associated evidence packs for review, endorsement and acceptance.

Provide environmental advice to AJAX leadership and project teams

  • Briefing notes, decision-support papers, Environmental Panel outputs, advice notes and clear recommendations for programme decision-makers.

Manage environmental requirements with General Dynamics and other suppliers

  • Supplier environmental requirements, contractor deliverable reviews, technical assessments, action trackers and acceptance recommendations for supplier outputs.

Build enduring AJAX environmental capability and reduce reliance on external support

  • Knowledge-transfer products, guidance material, training inputs, handover documentation and a long-term environmental improvement plan.

Essential Experience/Skills

  • A minimum of Level 4 NQF in a relevant engineering or science discipline.
  • Extensive experience in environmental management, environmental protection and development/maintenance of Environmental Management Systems (EMS).
  • Strong knowledge and extensive experience of environmental legislation, risk assessment, impact management and the use of ASEMS and environmental management tools/processes.
  • Practitioner-level environmental competence, supported by a minimum Level 4 qualification in a relevant engineering or science discipline.
  • Chartered or Incorporated Engineer/Scientist status (or equivalent experience) and membership of a relevant professional environmental institution.
  • Experience providing environmental advice, managing contractors, developing policy/processes and supporting environmental governance across projects.

Desired Experience/Skills

  • Demonstrated leadership, stakeholder engagement, influencing, analytical decision-making and continuous professional development (CPD).
  • Experience managing environmental activity within a Defence Major Programme (GMPP/CAT A) is desirable.

Additional Information

  • Weekly working pattern:
    • 3 days per week at MOD Abbey Wood, Bristol.
    • 1 day per week at General Dynamics, Merthyr Tydfil.
    • 1 day per week working from home.
  • SC Clearance required.
  • The core requirement runs to 31 March 2027.
