Job Title
Environmental Health Officer â Facilities & Environment
Job Purpose
This is a 6-month contract role responsible for delivering Environmental Health functions across facilities and environmental protection services, ensuring compliance with environmental legislation, public health standards, and regulatory requirements. The successful candidate will investigate environmental complaints, undertake inspections and enforcement activities, provide professional advice, and work closely with businesses, residents, contractors, and internal stakeholders to protect public health and maintain environmental standards.

Key Responsibilities
Environmental Health & Regulatory Compliance
Enforce relevant Environmental Health legislation, regulations, and statutory requirements.
Conduct inspections of commercial, public sector, and community premises.
Monitor compliance with environmental and public health standards.
Investigate environmental health concerns and determine appropriate corrective actions.
Facilities & Environmental Management
Undertake inspections relating to facilities management, environmental quality, and public health.
Monitor environmental standards across council-owned and managed facilities.
Advise on health, safety, environmental risks, and compliance issues.
Support the development and implementation of environmental improvement initiatives.
Complaint Investigation & Resolution
Investigate complaints relating to noise nuisance, statutory nuisance, waste and refuse issues, pollution incidents, odour, smoke, dust, and environmental hazards.
Gather evidence and determine appropriate enforcement action where required.
Provide practical advice and support to residents, businesses, and stakeholders.
Enforcement & Legal Action
Prepare and serve statutory notices where appropriate.
Maintain robust case files and evidential records.
Prepare reports, witness statements, and legal documentation.
Support prosecutions, appeals, and enforcement proceedings where necessary.
Partnership Working
Liaise with council departments, contractors, external agencies, regulatory bodies, and community stakeholders.
Work collaboratively to resolve environmental and public health issues.
Represent the service at meetings and stakeholder engagement events.
Records, Reporting & Performance
Maintain accurate records using corporate systems.
Produce inspection reports, enforcement documentation, and management information.
Monitor performance against service objectives and statutory requirements.
Contribute to service improvement initiatives and best practice development.

Person Specification
Qualifications
Essential
Degree or equivalent qualification in Environmental Health or a related discipline.
Eligibility to practice as an Environmental Health Officer.
Desirable
Membership of the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health (CIEH) or equivalent professional body.

Essential
Knowledge of Environmental Health legislation and regulatory frameworks.
Understanding of environmental protection and public health principles.
Knowledge of statutory nuisance legislation and enforcement procedures.
Understanding of evidence gathering, investigations, and legal processes.
Knowledge of facilities-related environmental standards and compliance requirements.

Experience working as an Environmental Health Officer or within Environmental Health services.

Desirable

Additional Information
This is a 6-month temporary contract
Rate: £40.00 per hour (Umbrella)
Pay is provided on a bi-weekly basis
Previous local authority/council Environmental Health experience is highly desirable
