Severn James is proud to be working with a well-established and reputable company within the construction and steel industry, currently looking to appoint an experienced and detail-driven Estimator to join their commercial team.

This is a fantastic opportunity to work with a company known for delivering high-quality steel products and fabrication services to the construction sector. The successful candidate will bring strong analytical skills, a solid understanding of structural or architectural drawings, and a meticulous approach to preparing accurate cost estimates and tender returns.

The role offers hybrid working, allowing a mix of office and home-based work, with occasional site or client meetings as needed.

Key Responsibilities

• Review and interpret technical drawings, specifications, and tender documents for structural and architectural steel packages.
• Prepare accurate and competitive cost estimates, considering materials, labour, fabrication time, transport, and overheads.
• Engage with clients, suppliers, and internal departments to clarify requirements and secure accurate pricing.
• Produce detailed quotation documents and tender submissions, ensuring all elements are commercially viable.
• Track submitted tenders, gather feedback, and assist in improving win rates and estimating accuracy.
• Work closely with sales, operations, and project management teams to support smooth project handover and delivery.
• Maintain a strong understanding of current market rates, supply chain factors, and industry developments.
• Use internal systems and estimating tools to manage data, quotes, and documentation effectively.

Experience & Skills Required

• Proven experience as an Estimator in the steel or construction industry—structural or architectural steel experience is highly desirable.
• Ability to confidently interpret engineering drawings and specifications.
• Strong commercial awareness and understanding of project costing.
• Excellent numeracy and analytical thinking with a high level of accuracy.
• Experience with estimating software and Microsoft Excel; knowledge of tools such as Tekla or StruM.I.S is a plus.
• Strong communication skills to liaise with suppliers, clients, and colleagues.
• Self-motivated and well-organised with the ability to meet deadlines and prioritise workload.
