Job Description - Exploration Geoscientist

Entity:

Production & Operations

Job Family Group:

Subsurface Group

Job Description:

Our purpose is to deliver energy to the world, today and tomorrow. For over 100 years, bp has focused on discovering, developing, and producing oil and gas in the nations where we operate. We are one of the few companies globally that can provide governments and customers with an integrated energy offering. Delivering our strategy sustainably is fundamental to achieving our ambition to be a net zero company by 2050 or sooner!

Please note that roles based out of SJS or Sunbury will move to Timber Square, Southwark, from Q4 2027.

We are seeking a Geophysicist to join the Middle East and North Africa Exploration Team, supporting bp’s exploration strategy by delivering high‑quality opportunities that meet investment and value criteria. The role sits within a team responsible for both bp‑operated and non‑operated exploration activity across the region, which is central to the Middle East and North Africa growth agenda. The work spans a broad range of geological settings and data types.

The team develops a deep understanding of regional play systems, works closely with partners to identify and recommend drilling opportunities, and integrates learnings from ongoing and future wells into exploration decision‑making. This requires the delivery of integrated subsurface interpretations drawing on seismic (2D and 3D), well data, analogue studies, and outcrop information. Familiarity with the regional geology of North Africa and the Mediterranean would be advantageous. All work is completed in line with the Exploration Common Process, with appropriate verification, and documented digitally in accordance with bp standards and best practice.

The Middle East and North Africa Exploration Team operates a flexible, agile model, with individuals deployed on the highest‑value opportunities. Future assignments may span the wider Eastern Hemisphere Exploration portfolio.

What will you deliver:

  • Contribute to basin-scale and play-based exploration studies, integrating seismic, well, geological, and regional datasets.

  • Independently interpret 2D and 3D seismic data (time and depth), including complex structural and stratigraphic settings.

  • Develop and mature exploration concepts, plays, leads, and prospects, including risking, volumetrics, and uncertainty assessment.

  • Apply advanced geophysical techniques where appropriate (e.g. seismic attributes, depth conversion, rock properties, AVO/DHI) to support exploration decision-making.

  • Integrate geophysics with petroleum systems, tectonics, stratigraphy, and basin evolution to generate coherent subsurface understanding.

  • Contribute to data room evaluations, farm-in / access opportunities, and new country entry assessments.

  • Work collaboratively with commercial, subsurface assurance, wells, and operations teams to support value-focused exploration outcomes.

  • Clearly communicate complex technical ideas to senior leadership and non-technical stakeholders.

Essential experience / skills:

  • Strong grounding in petroleum geology across a range of basin types and depositional settings.

  • High proficiency in seismic interpretation and integration with geological and well data.

  • Solid understanding of exploration workflows, uncertainty management, and value-focused decision making.

  • Proven ability to work effectively with incomplete or sparse datasets and develop robust exploration concepts.

  • Skilled at assessing, managing, and clearly communicating subsurface risk and uncertainty.

  • Comfortable working across time zones in an agile, flexible environment.

  • Effective communicator in both one-to-one and remote team settings.

  • Strong collaborator, able to work constructively within teams and with diverse stakeholders.

  • Demonstrates a continuous improvement mentality, with a focus on simplifying workflows and improving efficiency.

  • An understanding of the regional geology of Middle East, North Africa and the Mediterranean region will be beneficial

You will work with

You will be part of the Middle East and North Africa Exploration Team, reporting to an Exploration Team Leader. Key stakeholders include the Exploration Manager EMEA and the Vice President of Exploration.
