Job Description - External Hazards Lead

External Hazards Lead

Locations: Derby, Manchester or Warrington
Department: Safety & Regulatory Affairs

Why we need you

We need you to play a key role in developing the Rolls‑Royce SMR Power Station and supporting the successful completion of the Generic Design Assessment (GDA). You’ll also help assess potential future sites for our SMR power stations, ensuring they meet the requirements of our Environment, Safety, Security and Safeguards (E3S) Case.

This is an exciting opportunity to shape the future of clean energy and contribute to one of the UK's most impactful engineering programmes.

What you’ll be doing

We need you to:

  • Own, develop and maintain the external hazards safety case programme.
  • Prepare and deliver high‑quality external hazards submissions for the E3S Case and GDA.
  • Lead, manage and develop a team of up to 10 specialists.
  • Represent the project at internal technical reviews and external regulatory engagements.
  • Assess candidate SMR sites from an external hazards perspective.
  • Undertake deterministic analysis to support licensing activities.
  • Mentor and train team members to build capability across the function.

What you’ll bring

We’re looking for people who meet around 75% of the below – so even if you’re not sure you tick every box, we’d love to hear from you.

Essential skills & experience:

  • Strong external hazards knowledge and safety case development experience.
  • Experience working within the UK civil nuclear regulatory regime, or similar.
  • Background in Nuclear Power Plant design.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage effectively across multidisciplinary teams and with regulators.
  • Ability to work under pressure and deliver high‑quality outputs to demanding timelines.

Qualifications:

  • Degree (or equivalent experience) in Engineering, Maths, Physics or a related discipline.

What success looks like

  • A well‑governed, high‑quality external hazards safety case programme delivered to plan.
  • Robust submissions supporting the GDA and E3S Case.
  • A capable, motivated and well‑developed team delivering high‑quality analysis.
  • Strong working relationships across technical, programme and regulatory interfaces.
  • Clear, evidence‑based external hazards assessments for candidate SMR sites.

Your team & ways of working

You’ll join the Safety & Regulatory Affairs team and work closely with the Hazards Analysis Manager, PMO colleagues and technical specialists across the programme.
We support flexibility, collaboration and knowledge‑sharing, and we encourage a supportive environment where people grow and thrive.

Pay, benefits & rewards

  • Salary: £57,500 – £75,600
  • Benefit Allowance: £2,200
  • Bonus Opportunity: 12.5%
  • Life Assurance: 6× pensionable salary
  • Income Protection: 50%
  • Holiday: 28 days + bank holidays
  • New Joiner Payment: £250

Security & compliance

All offers are subject to security and financial probity checks, including a DBS check. These are not “pass/fail”: individual circumstances are always considered.
