Job Description - Facilities Assistant

Maintenance Assistant - Full Time, Permanent

Salary: £28,521 - £30,630 (Pay award pending)
Hours: 36 hours per week (including weekend rota)
Contract: Full Year (52 weeks), excluding Public Holidays
Location: Sutton, South London

We are seeking a proactive and dependable Maintenance Assistant to join a friendly and professional site team at a busy and well-regarded educational establishment. This role is vital in supporting the day-to-day upkeep, safety and functionality of the school grounds and buildings.

About the Role

The successful candidate will be involved in a wide variety of tasks to keep the premises in excellent working order, including:

  • Carrying out routine maintenance and minor repair works
  • Ensuring site security and acting as a keyholder
  • Setting up rooms and facilities for school events and external lettings
  • Contributing to planned decorating and improvement projects
  • Completing safety checks and maintaining compliance records
  • Supporting weekend and evening lettings on a rota basis

This position operates on a rotating 4-week shift pattern, including early mornings, late evenings, and occasional weekend duties.

What We Are Looking For

  • Practical maintenance or DIY experience (basic plumbing, decorating, repairs)
  • Ability to work independently and manage time effectively
  • Comfortable working as part of a small team
  • Understanding of health and safety requirements in a facilities setting
  • Flexibility to work shifts, including weekends, as part of a rota

Desirable

  • Experience working within a school, college or similar setting
  • D1 driving licence (or willingness to train)
  • Familiarity with PAT testing, COSHH and H&S risk assessments

All staff are expected to uphold high professional standards, maintain boundaries with students and visitors, and contribute positively to the wider team.
