The Role:

As a Family Practitioner within the Refugee Service, you will play a vital role in supporting separated children, unaccompanied asylum-seeking children, refugee young people, care leavers, families with No Recourse to Public Funds, and those arriving through the Homes for Ukraine scheme. You will help them to feel safe, settled and supported as they begin to rebuild their lives in the UK. This is a unique opportunity to join a specialist, creative and dedicated service working with children, young people and families who may have experienced trauma, loss, uncertainty, disrupted education, family separation, insecure immigration status, financial hardship and significant life transitions.

You will work collaboratively with Social Workers, Care Leaver Personal Advisers, managers, carers, education providers, health professionals, legal representatives, interpreters and partner agencies to deliver practical, relationship-based support. Through your work, you will empower young people to understand their rights and entitlements, access education and healthcare, sustain suitable accommodation, build independence, and make informed plans for their future.

What you’ll do:

• Build trusting relationships with children, young people and their families, using a trauma-informed, culturally sensitive and strengths-based approach.


• Provide practical and emotional support to young people in care and care leavers, including support with education, health, accommodation, daily living skills and access to services.


• Work collaboratively with colleagues to contribute to assessments, care planning, pathway planning and review activity.


• Support young people to understand and participate in decision-making about their lives.


• Use interpreters and other communication tools effectively to ensure young people are heard, understood and able to participate in planning about their lives.


• Maintain accurate records, prepare clear reports and contribute to defensible, child-centred decision-making.

What we’re looking for:

• Experience of supporting children, young people, families or care leavers, particularly those who may have experienced trauma, loss, disadvantage or significant change.


• Strong relationship-building skills, with the ability to communicate clearly, respectfully and creatively with young people whose first language may not be English.


• Confidence working with partner agencies and an understanding of the importance of joined-up support for young people in care and care leavers.


• An inclusive, curious and reflective approach, with a willingness to learn about the experiences, cultures and identities of the young people we support.


• Good organisational skills and the ability to manage competing priorities, record clearly and respond flexibly to changing circumstances.

Travel Requirements:

You will be required to travel to various locations within Hampshire and the Isle of Wight or other local authority, and it is essential that you have a current drivers’ licence and access to a reliable vehicle on a regular basis.
