Financial Controls Specialist

A leading utilities provider is seeking a Financial Controls Specialist to join its growing team - an ideal opportunity for a newly qualified accountant looking to make their first move into industry. This role places you at the centre of the financial controls function, where you'll help shape a robust control environment, manage risk, ensure compliance, and drive continuous improvement across key processes.

Based in the Midlands with hybrid working, you’ll gain exposure to multiple areas of the business, including the Financial Reporting team and the wider CFO function. This is a high-impact role, working closely with stakeholders across the organisation to embed best practices and strengthen assurance frameworks.

What you’ll be doing:

• Leading control testing cycles - from design to operational effectiveness
• Reviewing and refining process documentation and compliance reports
• Partnering with control owners, process leads, and external providers to resolve assurance issues
• Liaising with external auditors and internal teams to close control gaps
• Promoting best practice and spotting opportunities for improvement and driving change
• Collaborating with compliance teams to ensure robust testing
• Staying ahead of regulatory changes and communicating impacts

Requirements:

• Qualified Accountant (ACA/ACCA/CIMA or equivalent)
• Experience in audit or internal controls testing environment
• Strong analytical skills and attention to detail
• Ability to map and assess business processes and controls
• Confident communicator across all levels of the business
• Proficient in Microsoft Excel
• Someone who’s not just technically strong, but also curious, collaborative, and proactive.
