Formulation Chemist / Scientist with strong understanding of HSE, COSHH, and quality standards in a production environment as well as proven experience in formulation chemistry is required for a fast-growing manufacturing company based in Coventry, West Midlands. Some knowledge of agriculture / horticulture sectors would be advantageous.

SALARY: £35,000 - £50,000 per annum + Generous Bonus Scheme

We have a fantastic new job opportunity for a Formulation Chemist / Scientist with strong understanding of HSE, COSHH, and quality standards in a production environment as well as proven experience in formulation chemistry.

Working as a Formulation Chemist / Scientist you will oversee a small but capable manufacturing team (currently 2 full-time staff) and ensure production operations meet the highest standards for quality, safety, and regulatory compliance.

As a Formulation Chemist / Scientist you will be in a hands-on, senior-level role with a blend of technical and managerial responsibilities with a rare opportunity to influence the technical direction and shape the future of the company as they scale.

DUTIES

Your duties as a Formulation Chemist / Scientist will include:

• Develop and optimise formulations for liquid plant fertilisers and homecare products

• Continuously improve existing formulations for performance, stability, and cost-efficiency

• Manage and maintain accurate formulation documentation, MSDS files, and product specifications

• Establish and enforce robust quality control procedures for all product lines

• Monitor and analyse batch quality; maintain detailed records for traceability

• Lead all aspects of chemical handling, storage, and usage in line with HSE guidance, COSHH, and internal policies

• Create and update risk assessments and oversee health & safety practices across manufacturing operations

• Supervise and support the manufacturing team, ensuring smooth daily operations

• Provide training and guidance on best manufacturing practices and quality standards

• Troubleshoot production issues (blending, bottling, raw materials) and implement process improvements

• Source high-quality raw materials and packaging components at competitive prices

• Manage relationships with suppliers for chemicals, packaging, and production equipment

• Ensure product labelling and packaging meet UK and EU compliance requirements

• Cross-functional Support

• Act as the technical lead for internal stakeholders, including sales and customer support teams

• Contribute to the product development roadmap and future innovation plans

CANDIDATE REQUIREMENTS

• Degree (or higher) in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or a related field

• Proven experience in formulation chemistry, ideally within fertilisers, agricultural chemicals, or homecare products

• Strong understanding of HSE, COSHH, and quality standards in a production environment

• Hands-on leadership style, ideally with experience managing or mentoring small teams

• Highly organised, with excellent problem-solving and communication skills

• Ambitious and excited by the opportunity to grow with a company poised for expansion

• Previous experience in making agricultural / horticultural chemical products would be highly desirable
