About us

At National Gas, the work we do matters.

As Britain's national gas network, we help keep the lights on, businesses running, and homes warm by maintaining the critical infrastructure that transports gas across Great Britain. While providing the energy security Britain relies on today, we're also helping transform the network for a clean energy future.

Join us and help secure Britain's energy.

About the role

Help keep one of the UK's most important gas terminals operating safely, reliably, and compliantly.

As a Gas Quality Technician, you'll maintain and support the systems that monitor gas quality, ensuring they remain available when needed and continue to meet regulatory requirements. You'll also play an important role in strengthening cyber resilience and supporting the transition to future gas quality technologies.

Why this role matters

Bacton Gas Terminal is a key part of the East region's operations and plays an important role in the wider gas transmission network. The gas quality systems on site provide critical information that supports safe operation, regulatory compliance, and network performance.

In this role, you'll help ensure those systems remain reliable, secure, and available. From responding to faults and carrying out preventative maintenance to supporting cyber upgrades and audit activity, your work will directly contribute to minimising operational risk and maintaining performance at a strategically important site.

This is an opportunity to build specialist knowledge in a unique area of engineering while working closely with operations, engineering, and cyber teams to support both current and future gas quality systems.

What you'll be doing

  • Resolve gas composition queries and support the accurate operation of gas quality systems

  • Diagnose and rectify faults across gas analysers and associated equipment

  • Deliver planned maintenance to maximise system availability and reliability

  • Review condition monitoring information and implement preventative maintenance activities

  • Manage access controls, passwords, and network configurations in line with cyber security requirements

  • Support audits, compliance activities, and the ongoing improvement of maintenance procedures

  • Collaborate with operational, engineering, and cyber teams to support system upgrades and asset performance

What you'll bring

This role would suit someone who enjoys solving technical problems, working with critical infrastructure, and taking ownership of system reliability and performance.

Essential

  • Completed apprenticeship, recognised training scheme, or equivalent Level 3 qualification in a relevant engineering discipline such as mechanical, gas, instrumentation, chemical engineering, or other related engineering discipline

  • Strong fault-finding and problem-solving skills

  • Experience working within an engineering, industrial, utilities, or process environment

  • Ability to interpret technical information and analyse data

  • Strong communication and organisational skills

  • Ability to work safely, follow procedures, and maintain compliance standards

  • Full UK driving licence

Desirable

  • Knowledge of gas analysers, SCADA, PLC, telemetry, or fiscal metering systems

  • Previous instrumentation experience

  • Experience of Danalyzer or Siemens analyser technology

  • Understanding of audit, compliance, or regulated operational environments

  • EngTech registration or a desire to work towards professional recognition

Security clearance

This role is subject to National Security Vetting (NSV). Candidates must be eligible to obtain and maintain Security Clearance (SC) throughout their employment. For further information, visit GOV.UK (UK Security Vetting: Clearance Levels).

What we offer

  • Market-leading double-match pension (up to 12% company contribution)

  • Annual performance bonus up to 6%

  • Access to the Tusker salary sacrifice car scheme

  • 26 days holiday (plus statutory holidays)

  • 10x salary life assurance and income protection

  • Flexible benefits including healthcare, dental, and technology options

  • Family-friendly policies, wellbeing support, and professional development opportunities
