About the role:

The Geophysical Analysis team is a centrally managed team of flow-to-work geophysicists who are deployed globally to scope and deliver seismic analysis or gravity, magnetics and CSEM projects. The team is accountable for the consistent application of specialist geophysics workflows and toolkits across subsurface. The diverse projects span the entire range of Exploration, Reservoir Development and Low Carbon subsurface activities. Projects range from fundamental data quality assessments through to high end inversion for reservoir property prediction. In addition, the team supports the development, enhancement and deployment of our digital workflows and toolkit through deployment to the Rapid squads and close collaboration with the Technology organisation. The team is also heavily involved in supporting discipline capability through development and delivery of formal training classes, 1-1 technical coaching and supporting Communities of Practice.

The Team Leader will report to the Subsurface Characterisation Specialist Manager in GSS and will work closely with GSS managers and team leads within Regions and Exploration to identify and deliver technical requirements and provide technical leadership to ensure delivery of high-quality subsurface work in support of business priorities. They will drive technical excellence, manage risk, and foster a culture of inclusion and continuous improvement while supporting team development and well-being.

The role can be based either in Sunbury / Aberdeen / Houston or Trinidad & Tobago. The preference is for UK location.

What you will deliver:

Planning & Prioritisation

  • Collaborate with regions and exploration to ensure appropriate resourcing for work requests

  • Work with the Oil and Gas Technology Org and Rapid Integration Team leader and squads to support development and deployment of analysis toolkits and workflows

  • Influence work plans and prioritisation based on team capacity and capability.

  • Raise resource gaps or push back on unrealistic priorities when vital.

Technical Leadership

  • Work with Advisors and SMEs to define and uphold subsurface discipline standards and guidelines and address technical challenges

  • Provide technical coaching, verification, and guidance to ensure appropriate quality delivery in line with standard process.

  • Promote knowledge sharing and continuous improvement across teams and regions.

Risk Management

  • Ensure robust work planning and integration into broader subsurface workflows.

  • Drive completion of self-verification plans and address gaps promptly.

  • Champion a “speak up” culture for technical concerns, ensuring psychologically safe and reliable delivery of business challenge aligned products.

People Performance Management & Development

  • Support team members to define delivery and development goals using tools such as focus@bp and grow@bp.

  • Hold regular one-to-one check-ins to review progress against goals, provide regular constructive feedback and address wellbeing concerns.

  • Conduct regular team meetings to update team on organizational priorities, share technical findings, recognise team achievements, raise safety and cyber security awareness and foster psychological safety and inclusion  

  • Performance manage time writing of the team to maximise cost recovery and optimise central organisation cost while maintaining quality of products

  • Support individual and team development through GROW conversations, development forums (including providing specific written feedback), recruitment and managed moves and the in-role promotion process.

  • Work with the Head of Geoscience & Discipline advisors to build & maintain capability for geophysical analysis and support effective application of workflows across Subsurface

What you will need to be successful:

Bachelor’s degree or higher in Geophysics, or related science.

Track record of delivering seismic analysis workflows and integrating products across a range of geographies and geological settings, across the value chain. Experience with non-seismic geophysics would also be beneficial

Ability to lead and motivate diverse, distributed teams, fostering collaboration and psychological safety and encouraging open communication.

Experience in people development (career discussions and mentoring).

Skilled in coaching and empowering individuals to take ownership of technical quality.

Strong interpersonal skills with sound judgement on when and how to influence partners and decision-makers.

Ability to work across organisational interfaces to find opportunities and deliver solutions benefiting the business.

Ability to manage multiple work fronts and switch contexts effectively in fast-paced, complex environments.

Skilled in aligning team activities with business priorities and defining clear deliverables.

Experience in driving integration across disciplines and embedding lessons learned.

Expertise in technical verification.

Experience of improving discipline guidelines, workflows, and toolkits to maintain quality standards.

Commitment to wellbeing and sustainable workload management within teams

Proactive in adopting agile practices and digital solutions to transform technical delivery.

Strong desire for continuous learning and development, both personally and through others
