Our client is a well-established local authority seeking an experienced Governance Lawyer to join their Legal and Governance team. This is an excellent opportunity to advise on governance, constitutional and public law while supporting Members, senior officers and the Monitoring Officer.
The Role
As Governance Lawyer, you'll provide expert legal advice on governance, constitutional and public law matters, supporting lawful and effective decision-making across the organisation. Working within a collaborative legal team, you'll also have the opportunity to be appointed as Deputy Monitoring Officer.
Key Responsibilities
· Advise on governance, constitutional and public law matters.
· Support the Monitoring Officer and advise Members and senior officers.
· Review Cabinet, Council and Committee reports, identifying legal risks.
· Advise on governance issues including procurement, policy and strategic projects.
· Develop governance guidance and deliver training.
· Manage Member Code of Conduct complaints and investigations.
· Attend committee meetings to provide legal advice.
· Help develop governance policies and decision-making processes.
About You
You'll be an experienced legal professional with strong public law knowledge, excellent communication skills and the confidence to provide pragmatic advice to senior stakeholders.
Essential Experience
· Qualified Solicitor, Barrister or Chartered Legal Executive with relevant post-qualification experience.
· Strong knowledge of local government, governance and public law.
· Experience advising senior stakeholders on governance and decision-making.
· Excellent drafting and communication skills.
· Ability to manage a varied caseload independently.
Desirable Experience
· Experience supporting a Monitoring Officer or Deputy Monitoring Officer.
· Experience managing Code of Conduct complaints.
· Experience delivering governance training.
· Experience within local government or another regulated environment.
