Job Description - Graduate Optical Systems Engineer

We are Foundational.

We're an early-stage, mission-driven startup tackling one of the most exciting and complex challenges today to create the most precise understanding of space and earth using ground-based lasers.

Using satellite laser ranging (SLR) data we are empowering the next generation of space companies with exquisite data that allows new forms of resilient navigation, earth observation and precise space traffic control - essential for the sustainability and resilience of the space domain, resilient navigation an the future of earth observation.

This mission, this technology... will be foundational the future of civilization.

What you'll be doing

  • This is not a theoretical role. At Foundational, we are building the most precise understanding of the space domain in history, and that requires optical systems that push the boundaries of physics.

  • As a Graduate Optical Systems Engineer, you will own the full engineering lifecycle. You will move fluidly between the whiteboard, the simulation environment, and the lab. One day you might be writing Python scripts to model atmospheric turbulence or laser propagation; the next, you will be in the cleanroom aligning high-power optical benches or manufacturing 3D-printed mounts for rapid prototyping.

  • We are looking for the same DNA found in top-tier rocketry and formula student teams: a relentless drive to make complex systems work in the real world. You will work directly alongside our founding engineers to design, build, and deploy the ground-based laser networks that will secure the future of space.

Essential experience

  • BSc/MEng/MPhys in Physics, Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace, or Optical Engineering (or similar).

  • The "Builder" Mindset: You must demonstrate engineering experience beyond the curriculum. We want to see evidence that you have built, broken, and fixed physical systems - whether through projects, robotics competitions, or ambitious personal projects.

  • Simulation & Code: You are comfortable using code to solve physical problems. You have strong proficiency in Python or MATLAB for modelling data, simulating physical systems, or automating test equipment.

  • CAD Literacy: You can use tools like SolidWorks, Fusion 360, or Inventor (we use OnShape) to design parts for manufacture. You understand that an optical design is only as good as the mechanical system that holds it.

  • First-Principles Thinking: You can break down complex problems (e.g., "how do we hit a 10cm target from 1000km away?") into fundamental physics and build a solution from the ground up.

Desirable (We'd love it if you have...)

  • Optical Experience: Exposure to optical design software (e..g. Zemax, Code V) or practical experience aligning lasers, lenses, and mirrors in a lab environment.

  • Rapid Prototyping: Experience with 3D printing, laser cutting, or basic workshop machining. You enjoy getting your hands dirty to validate an idea quickly.

  • Testing Rigor: Experience designing validation campaigns. You understand the difference between a simulation working and a physical prototype surviving a drop test or thermal cycle.

  • Internship Experience: You have spent time in high-growth startups, research labs, or the aerospace sector (e.g., ESA, UK Space Agency, Spin-outs) where you contributed to real hardware or flight/field campaigns.

What We Offer

  • A high-impact role with genuine ownership and autonomy.

  • EMI options in a fast-growing VC backed startup in the spacetech industry

  • Generous compensation and pension contributions

  • Offices in central London right in the heart of Borough and London Bridge with snacks, tea, coffee and regular socials.
