Hazardous Materials Defence Engineer
We’re growing our Materials Performance team to support some of the UK’s most important defence programmes—where safe, compliant, and sustainable use of materials really matters.
This is a role for someone at an early stage in their career who wants to build real expertise, take on meaningful challenges, and accelerate their professional growth. You will develop deep hazardous materials knowledge within a highly regulated engineering environment.
Why this role is different
From early on, you’ll be supporting real projects—working alongside experienced consultants to understand how materials compliance works in practice. We’ll help you build confidence step by step. Through a mix of hands-on project work, mentoring, and structured development, you’ll gain the technical depth and judgement needed to work in regulated industries like defence. If you’re motivated by learning quickly, asking good questions, and doing work that stands up to scrutiny, you’ll fit right in.
What you’ll work on
You’ll support senior engineers across a range of materials compliance and assurance activities, for example:
Materials regulations & compliance: learning how regulations such REACH and RoHS apply in real engineering projects
Hazardous materials management: understanding how materials are controlled safely across an asset’s lifecycle
Materials assurance activities: helping assess compliance with regulations, client policies, and internal standards
Environmental and safety considerations: supporting decisions that protect people and the environment
Technical evidence: contributing to clear, well-structured documentation that justifies engineering decisions
What you’ll be doing day-to-day
Support technical work on materials compliance and assurance tasks (learning how to approach problems in a structured, evidence-led way)
Assist in developing and reviewing compliance processes and documentation
Contribute to project work, supporting delivery against scope, quality, and timelines
Help gather and interpret information for materials-related assessments
Build familiarity with relevant legislation and what it means in practice
Work closely with experienced engineers who will guide your development
Contribute to technical reports that are clear, accurate, and auditable
What we’re looking for
We’re looking for someone with strong potential and the right mindset. You should have:
Some experience (industry, placement, or postgraduate work) in a relevant field
A degree in materials science, chemistry, engineering, or similar
An interest in materials compliance, safety, or environmental impact
Clear communication skills—you can explain your thinking and write in a structured way
A careful, detail-oriented approach suited to regulated environments
Nice-to-haves (not required)
Any exposure to the defence industry
Awareness of REACH, RoHS, or similar regulations
Experience with materials testing, lab work, or technical analysis
A postgraduate qualification or further study in a related field
Your development pathway
This role is designed to help you grow quickly and build a strong technical foundation. You’ll be supported through:
Day-to-day learning on live projects
Mentoring from experienced consultants
Exposure to materials compliance, regulation, and real-world application
Opportunities to gradually take on more responsibility and independence
A clear progression path to subject matter expert as your confidence and capability develop
Due to the nature of the work that Frazer‑Nash Consultancy undertakes, candidates will be required to undergo pre‑employment screening and must be able to satisfy clearance criteria for UK National Security Vetting.
