Job Purpose

At National Grid Electricity Transmission, our assets are critical to delivering a safe, reliable and resilient electricity network for millions of customers.

As Head of Strategic Asset Management, you will lead the development and delivery of our Asset Management Strategy, ensuring alignment between business objectives, network needs, investment priorities and regulatory commitments. You will connect long-term asset requirements, risk, performance, resilience and affordability into a clear strategic direction that supports both current network performance and the transition to a Net Zero future.

This is a highly influential leadership role. As one of the organisation's leading voices for Asset Management, you will champion best practice, drive organisational maturity and ensure Asset Management principles are understood, adopted and embedded across the business. You will also play a key role in business planning and regulatory activities, helping to shape investment strategies, regulatory submissions and long-term plans that deliver value for customers and stakeholders.

What you'll do

• Define, own and evolve National Grid Electricity Transmission's Asset Management Strategy, ensuring it aligns with corporate objectives, network requirements and regulatory commitments.


• Translate business and network strategy into clear Asset Management priorities, objectives and investment decisions.


• Lead the development and governance of the frameworks, policies and processes that connect strategy with asset plans, investment portfolios, business plans and delivery outcomes.


• Champion Asset Management across the organisation by driving awareness, education and engagement, helping colleagues understand the value and impact of Asset Management.


• Drive the continuous improvement of the Asset Management System, ensuring alignment with industry best practice and international asset management standards.


• Shape long-term asset plans and investment strategies, balancing risk, resilience, performance, affordability and whole-life value.


• Lead the development of robust business plans and investment cases, ensuring asset needs, costs, benefits and customer value are clearly evidenced and articulated.


• Work closely with Finance, Regulation, Engineering, Operations, Network Planning and Digital teams to ensure a joined-up approach to strategic decision-making.


• Represent Asset Management in senior internal and external forums, building confidence with regulators, auditors and key stakeholders.


• Provide leadership through business planning and regulatory cycles, translating complex technical, financial and regulatory information into clear recommendations and strategic decisions.


• Lead and develop a high-performing team, creating a culture of accountability, collaboration and continuous improvement.

About you

We're looking for an experienced Asset Management leader with the credibility, energy and influence to drive meaningful change across a large, complex organisation.

You will bring a strong track record in Asset Management, Asset Strategy, Business Planning, Regulation or Investment leadership, alongside the ability to translate complex challenges into clear priorities and business outcomes.

You'll have:

• A degree, or equivalent qualification, in Engineering, Economics, Business or a related technical discipline.


• Significant experience in a senior Asset Management, strategic planning, business planning, regulatory or investment leadership role within a complex and ideally regulated environment.


• Proven experience developing and implementing Asset Management Strategies, Strategic Asset Management Plans or equivalent long-term planning frameworks.


• Strong knowledge of asset management principles, asset risk, lifecycle planning and investment decision-making.


• Experience leading major business planning, investment or regulatory submissions and engaging with senior stakeholders throughout the process.


• The ability to build compelling evidence, narratives and investment cases that support strategic decision-making.


• Experience working with regulators, auditors or assurance bodies, with the confidence to represent Asset Management at a senior level.


• Strong commercial and financial awareness, including affordability analysis, risk management, investment trade-offs and whole-life value assessment.


• A track record of driving organisational maturity and embedding Asset Management best practice across a business.


• Exceptional communication and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to influence, challenge and build alignment across a wide range of audiences.


• The passion, credibility and leadership presence to act as an ambassador for Asset Management and inspire others to embrace its value.

It would be advantageous if you also have:

• Chartered Engineer, Chartered Manager or equivalent professional status.


• Membership of a relevant professional body, such as the Institute of Asset Management, Institution of Engineering and Technology, or Institute of Leadership.


• Experience within electricity transmission, utilities or other asset-intensive infrastructure sectors.


• Professional qualifications or significant experience in regulation, economics, finance or business planning.

What you'll get

A competitive salary between £90,000 - £100,000  – dependent on capability

As well as your base salary, you will receive a company car or allowance, a bonus of up to 40% of your salary for stretch performance and a competitive contributory pension scheme where we will double match your contribution to a maximum company contribution of 12%.
