Health & Safety Manager – Rail Projects

Salary and Package

Location

Full-time, Permanent Position

About the Company

Our client is a well-established construction and building contractor delivering roofing, refurbishment, maintenance and specialist construction projects across the UK. A significant proportion of their work is within the rail sector, where they undertake station refurbishments, roofing works, structural repairs and associated building projects for major rail clients. Operating nationally, they have built a strong reputation for delivering complex projects safely and efficiently, with project values typically ranging from £2m to £3m and reaching up to £10m on larger schemes.

Why Join Them

This Health & Safety Manager position has been created due to continued company growth and an expanding project portfolio. The business already employs an experienced Health & Safety Manager and is now looking to strengthen the team with a second Health & Safety Manager to support its increasing workload across the UK.

The successful Health & Safety Manager will join a stable and growing contractor with a strong pipeline of work, particularly within the rail sector. You'll work closely with operational and senior management teams, be involved in a wide variety of projects and have the opportunity to influence health and safety standards across the business. The role also offers a flexible working arrangement, combining site visits, office-based work and home working.

About the Role

As Health & Safety Manager, you will support the delivery of health, safety and compliance standards across multiple construction and rail projects nationwide. Working alongside the existing Health & Safety Manager, you will provide practical support to site teams and management, helping to ensure projects are delivered safely and in line with industry regulations, client requirements and company procedures.

The role is split between site visits, office-based work in Stockton-on-Tees and home working. Ideally, you will spend 2-3 days per week on site, one day in the office and the remaining time working from home.

Key responsibilities include:

* Supporting the implementation and continuous improvement of the company's health and safety management systems

* Conducting regular site inspections, audits and compliance reviews across live projects

* Preparing, reviewing and approving Risk Assessments and Method Statements (RAMS)

* Carrying out project-specific risk assessments and ensuring appropriate control measures are in place

* Managing fatigue risk processes and monitoring compliance with working time requirements

* Delivering site safety briefings, toolbox talks and workforce inductions

* Supporting project teams in developing safe systems of work

* Monitoring site activities and providing practical health and safety guidance to managers, supervisors and operatives

* Assisting with accident, incident and near-miss investigations

* Producing reports and ensuring corrective actions are completed

* Supporting RISQS compliance, audits and accreditation requirements

* Maintaining compliance with rail industry standards, client requirements and relevant legislation

* Reviewing subcontractor compliance and monitoring site safety performance

* Supporting permit-to-work systems and site safety documentation

* Monitoring training, competency and compliance records

* Working closely with operational teams during project planning and delivery

* Promoting a positive health and safety culture throughout the business

Applicants should have previous experience within a Health & Safety Manager role in the construction sector. Experience working on rail projects is highly desirable, along with a good understanding of RISQS requirements and rail industry standards. Candidates should be comfortable travelling nationally and working across multiple project locations.

Summary

This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced Health & Safety Manager to join a growing contractor with a strong presence in the rail and construction sectors. Offering a varied workload, flexible working arrangements and the opportunity to work on projects valued up to £10m, the role provides long-term career stability and the chance to play a key part in the company's continued growth.
