Salary: £40,000 basic, with uncapped commission taking realistic on-target earnings past £50,000
Location: Based centrally around Oxford, Reading or Basingstoke, covering the South West and South East of England
If you have spent years getting heat pump installs right from the tools and now want your technical judgement to matter more than your toolbox, this is worth a proper look.
Why this role
Our client is a fast-growing, tech-enabled heat pump installer with a genuine ambition to become the UK's number one, and a trusted partner to some of the country's leading heat pump retailers and manufacturers. The survey team is small and fully stretched, and the business is scaling fast, from over ten jobs a week now to twenty or thirty within the year. This hire is about adding real coverage and taking the pressure off, not squeezing more out of a team already at capacity.
It is also a role built the right way round. Leads are qualified by a dedicated sales team before you are sent out, so you are not there to sell. You are there to be the credible technical expert who gets the survey and the design right, then hands back to the team to close. And the mission behind it is real, not marketing copy: making the practical side of net zero easier for everyone involved, from the customer to the installer.
What you'll do
You will lead in-person site surveys assessing heat pump suitability across homes from Portsmouth and Bournemouth up towards Birmingham, producing accurate heat loss calculations and system sizing. Taking on the full system design yourself is where the real value sits, both for the client and for your own earnings, so this matters more than any single qualification on paper. You will support installation teams and project managers with technical guidance, help refine survey and design tools, and pick up occasional annual servicing and reactive maintenance. You will work with Spruce design software and an iPad Pro with LiDAR scanning for surveys, so existing familiarity with either is a genuine advantage.
About you
You are either an experienced heating engineer, NVQ3 qualified in plumbing or heating, ready to move off the tools, or you are already working as a heat pump surveyor. Either route works, though someone who can hit the ground running has a slight edge. You are comfortable driving to up to two surveys a day across a wide patch, hold a clean UK licence, and understand building fabric, heat loss and hydronic systems properly. You know MCS standards, and you are genuinely good with people, even without doing hard sales. BPEC or equivalent is useful, but real design ability shown at interview counts for more than the certificate. Experience leading a team or managing technical workflows is a plus for anyone who wants to grow into running a survey team.
Rewards & growth
Commission is split three ways between sales, design and survey on every job, uncapped, so on-target earnings move comfortably past £50,000 and higher again if you take on the design work yourself. There is also a bonus scheme, 28 days' holiday including bank holidays, and a company vehicle. The business has built its own software to strip the paperwork out of the surveyor's day, with tools in development that let you dictate survey results on the drive home and routes planned properly, so you are not crossing the country twice in a week. The whole team meets in person every month, and there is a genuine path to lead your own survey team as the company grows Only candidates based in UK and eligible to work in UK are allowed
