Job Description - Higher Level Teaching Assistant (HLTA)

Higher-Level Teaching Assistant (HLTA) - SEMH & SEND
Location: Bentley, Hampshire | Salary: Up to £28,573 | Full-Time, Permanent

We’re proud to be working in partnership with a fantastic specialist independent school in Bentley, to recruit a passionate and proactive Higher-Level Teaching Assistant (HLTA).

This nurturing school provides therapeutic, child-centred education for boys aged 11-17 with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs, often alongside additional SEND such as Autism, ADHD, and communication difficulties. With small class sizes and a trauma-informed approach, the school offers a safe and supportive environment where every child can thrive.

About the Role:

As an HLTA, you’ll be a key part of the school’s dynamic team—supporting learning, leading small group sessions, and helping to create a positive, engaging environment for students with complex needs. This is a varied and hands-on role, ideal for someone who is creative, resilient, and passionate about making a difference.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Supporting teachers in the classroom and leading small group sessions
  • Working 1:1 with students to support learning and emotional regulation
  • Managing classroom resources and creating engaging displays
  • Accompanying students on educational trips and visits
  • Supporting students during social times, including lunch
  • Managing heightened behaviours and ensuring student safety
  • Engaging students through games, science experiments, and creative activities
  • Celebrating student achievements and progress
  • Participating in therapy sessions and reflective practice

What We’re Looking For:

  • Experience supporting children or young people with SEMH and/or SEND
  • A Level 4 TA qualification
  • Confidence in leading learning activities and supporting structured routines
  • A calm, consistent, and empathetic approach
  • Strong communication and behaviour management skills
  • A collaborative mindset and a willingness to bring your own interests and ideas to the role

Benefits:

  • Competitive salary and enhanced occupational sickness scheme
  • Extensive training and professional development opportunities
  • Small class sizes and a supportive team environment
  • Regular therapeutic supervision and wellbeing support
  • Flexible pension scheme
  • Access to employee benefits including wellbeing services, salary sacrifice schemes, and discounts on high street brands and dining

This is a fantastic opportunity to join a school that values your voice, your creativity, and your commitment to helping young people succeed.
