Job Description - Higher Level Teaching Assistant (HLTA)

Higher-Level Teaching Assistant (HLTA) - Complex Needs & SEMH
Location: Kidderminster | Salary: Up to £25,700 | Full-Time, Permanent

We are proud to be working in partnership with a fantastic SEN school, a truly innovative and nurturing special school in the heart of rural Shropshire, as they seek to appoint a dedicated and compassionate Higher-Level Teaching Assistant (HLTA).

The school is a small, specialist setting providing highly personalised education for up to 12 pupils aged 8-18 with severe and complex needs. These include learning disabilities, physical and health challenges, and behaviours that challenge.

Many pupils also have Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs, Autism, ADHD, and communication difficulties.

The school’s trauma-informed, therapeutic approach places the child at the centre of everything they do. With small class sizes, a high staff-to-pupil ratio, and a collaborative ethos, this is a setting where staff are empowered to make a real difference.

About the Role:

As an HLTA, you’ll play a vital role in supporting the delivery of individualised learning and care. You’ll work closely with teachers, therapists, and families to ensure each pupil receives the support they need to thrive—academically, emotionally, and socially.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Support the implementation of EHCP targets and therapeutic strategies
  • Lead small group sessions or cover classes when required
  • Assist with personal care, feeding, and mobility needs
  • Promote communication using Makaton, AAC, and other total communication methods
  • Facilitate sensory and practical learning activities
  • Use behaviour support strategies to promote emotional regulation and engagement
What We’re Looking For:
  • Experience supporting children or young people with additional needs
  • A flexible, empathetic, and child-centred approach
  • Strong safeguarding awareness and commitment to pupil wellbeing
  • Confidence in leading small groups and supporting structured routines
  • Creativity, initiative, and a willingness to learn

Benefits and Rewards

  • Extensive therapeutic training and professional development
  • Competitive salary and flexible pension options
  • Small, supportive team with a shared vision
  • Regular supervision and wellbeing support
  • Opportunities to grow your career within a national organisation that nurtures talent and promotes from within
  • Access to employee benefits and wellbeing services

This is a unique opportunity to join a school that is truly transforming lives. If you’re ready to bring your compassion, creativity, and commitment to a role where every day counts, we’d love to hear from you.
