The Role:

As a History Centre Assistant, you'll support the History Curriculum Centre in Winchester, helping schools across Hampshire bring history to life through our artefact loan service. Working closely with the History Centre Manager, you'll ensure that artefact loan boxes containing high-quality historical resources are prepared, maintained and dispatched to schools so that children and young people can enjoy engaging, hands-on learning experiences.

This is a practical, varied role that combines administrative support with the hands-on management of artefact collections. Much of your time will be spent preparing, checking, packing and moving artefact loan boxes, while also maintaining accurate records, supporting customers and helping to care for valuable historical resources.

What you’ll do:

  • Prepare, pack and dispatch artefact loan boxes, ensuring resources are available on time and in excellent condition.

  • Carry out inventory and condition checks on returned boxes, identifying and resolving missing or damaged items.

  • Process artefact loan bookings, maintain loan records and support the smooth running of the service.

  • Act as a key point of contact for schools, providing excellent customer service by phone, email and in person.

  • Provide administrative and financial support, including processing payments and supporting day-to-day service operations.

What we’re looking for:

  • Experience in an administrative and/or customer-focused role.

  • Excellent attention to detail and strong organisational skills, with the ability to manage a varied workload.

  • Good communication skills and the ability to work both independently and as part of a team.

  • The ability to regularly lift, carry and move artefact boxes weighing up to 25kg.

  • An interest in history would be a plus, but isn't essential.
