Housing Advisor

3 months Contract with a Local Authority

Job Purpose

As a Housing Advisor, you will play a key role in preventing and relieving homelessness in accordance with the Homelessness Reduction Act 2017. You will assess housing needs, manage complex homelessness cases, provide housing advice and support, and work with customers to secure sustainable housing solutions.

Key Duties/Accountabilities

• Conduct housing needs assessments and develop personalised housing plans.
  
  


• Prevent and relieve homelessness through advice, advocacy, negotiation, and mediation.
  
  


• Manage a complex caseload of customers at risk of homelessness.
  
  


• Assess homelessness applications under Part VII of the Housing Act 1996.
  
  


• Undertake homelessness investigations and provide assessment outcomes.
  
  


• Deliver front-of-house housing advice and assistance services.
  
  


• Provide face-to-face appointments, drop-in support, and telephone advice.
  
  


• Conduct home visits where required.
  
  


• Assess temporary accommodation needs and arrange placements.
  
  


• Support customers in accessing private rented accommodation and alternative housing options.
  
  


• Assist customers with bidding for council and housing association properties.
  
  


• Provide housing advice to households affected by welfare reform and benefit changes.
  
  


• Negotiate with landlords and other stakeholders to prevent homelessness.
  
  


• Refer customers to appropriate housing support and pathway services.
  
  


• Support customers transitioning from supported housing into settled accommodation.
  
  


• Maintain accurate and detailed case records using housing management systems.
  
  


• Work collaboratively with internal teams, landlords, support services, and partner agencies.
  
  


• Ensure compliance with homelessness legislation, guidance, and council policies.
  
  

Essential Experience Required

• Previous experience working in Housing Options, Homelessness Prevention, Housing Advice, or a similar Housing Needs environment.
  
  


• Experience applying the Homelessness Reduction Act 2017.
  
  


• Experience assessing homelessness applications under Part VII of the Housing Act 1996.
  
  


• Experience managing complex housing and homelessness caseloads.
  
  


• Experience working directly with vulnerable customers.
  
  


• Experience providing housing advice, mediation, and tenancy sustainment support.
  
  


• Experience preventing homelessness through negotiation and housing options approaches.
  
  


• Experience assessing temporary accommodation requirements.
  
  


• Experience liaising with landlords, housing providers, and support agencies.
  
  


• Strong knowledge of housing legislation, welfare benefits, and homelessness prevention.
  
  


• Excellent case management, communication, and customer service skills.
  
  

Essential Qualifications Required

• Relevant Housing, Homelessness, or Housing Advice experience.
  
  


• Standard DBS.
  
  


• Right to Work in the UK.

• Working hours: 35 hours per week.
  
  


• Location: Camberwell Foyer, 90 Denmark Hill, London, SE5 8RX.
