Job Description - IT Engineer - Schools

Are you a proactive IT professional who thrives in a dynamic school environment? We're recruiting on behalf of a well-established independent school seeking an experienced IT Engineer to take ownership of their onsite IT function and provide technical leadership and daily support across the school and its onsite events company.

Location: Kingston, London, Surrey
Salary: Up to £36,000 (depending on experience)

What’s On Offer

  • Salary up to £36,000 (DOE)
  • 25 days annual leave plus bank holidays
  • Generous pension scheme
  • Free onsite lunches and parking
  • Flexible working hours during school holiday periods
  • Ongoing training and career development opportunities
  • Supportive and collaborative working environment

This is a pivotal role offering the opportunity to shape the school’s IT infrastructure, manage day-to-day technical operations, and contribute to long-term digital strategy — all while working closely with both internal stakeholders and external service providers.

Key Responsibilities

  • Act as the primary onsite IT contact, delivering 1st/2nd line support and escalating complex issues to the 3rd line MSP.
  • Manage and maintain the school’s IT infrastructure: Windows servers, virtual environments, storage, networking, Wi-Fi, firewalls, and end-user devices (Windows/macOS/iOS).
  • Support the events team with their day-to-day IT requirements.
  • Administer systems such as Microsoft 365, SharePoint, Teams, Entra ID, Intune, and Apple MDM.
  • Oversee IT projects including server migrations, OS upgrades, and database implementation.
  • Support educational software platforms including MIS (iSAMS), safeguarding (CPOMS), and e-learning tools.
  • Coordinate priorities and projects with external MSPs and third-party vendors.
  • Provide end-user training and support to staff and students.
  • Maintain IT policies around cybersecurity, backup, disaster recovery, and compliance.
  • Work closely with school leadership and central IT management to shape IT strategy and budget planning.
  • Line manage a Junior IT Engineer, mentoring their growth and development.

What We’re Looking For

  • Experience as an IT Engineer, ideally within an educational setting.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate clearly with non-technical users.
  • Excellent organisational skills, able to manage multiple priorities independently.
  • Solid technical knowledge of:
    • Windows Server, AD, DNS, DHCP, VMware
    • Microsoft 365, Intune, Entra ID
    • End-user device management (Windows/macOS/iOS)
    • Networking fundamentals (VLAN, VPN, TCP/IP, DNS, switches, firewalls)
    • Audio-visual solutions in educational settings
  • Experience with MIS, safeguarding tools, VOIP, and IT service management frameworks (ITIL) is a plus.
  • A self-starter mindset with a desire for continuous learning and improvement.

Please note: An enhanced DBS check will be required for this role due to its setting within an educational environment
