Java Backend Engineer – Azure / Spring Boot / Microservices

About the Role

We are looking for an experienced Java Backend Engineer to join a high-performing engineering team developing intelligent digital products and services supporting employees and HR stakeholders.

This is a hands-on engineering role focused on building scalable, secure and reliable backend services, with AI increasingly at the core of the products being developed.

You will work closely with product managers, designers and fellow engineers in an Agile environment, contributing across the full software development lifecycle from design and development through to automated testing, deployment and production support.

Key Responsibilities

* Design, develop and continuously improve scalable backend services using Java and Spring Boot.

* Build and maintain microservices and REST APIs within a modern cloud environment.

* Develop high-quality, maintainable and well-documented software.

* Contribute to API and service design, including REST and GraphQL.

* Implement automated testing and modern engineering practices throughout the SDLC.

* Build reliable, secure and observable services suitable for production environments.

* Monitor application health, investigate incidents and contribute to root-cause remediation.

* Work with cloud technologies across the Microsoft Azure ecosystem.

* Collaborate with product, design and engineering teams to translate business and user requirements into effective technical solutions.

* Contribute to security, compliance, performance and other non-functional requirements.

* Share technical knowledge and contribute to a collaborative engineering culture.

* Help develop AI-enabled solutions that are explainable, ethical and human-centric.

Essential Skills & Experience

We are looking for candidates with strong hands-on experience in:

* Java

* Spring Boot

* Spring Cloud

* Spring Batch

* Microservices architecture

* REST API development and design

* GraphQL

* NoSQL databases, ideally Azure Cosmos DB

* Apache Kafka / Confluent Kafka

* OAuth 2.0

* Microsoft Entra ID / Azure AD

* Microsoft Azure

* Agile software development environments

* Automated testing, CI/CD and modern software engineering practices

* Production monitoring, troubleshooting and observability

What We're Looking For

We are looking for a pragmatic and collaborative backend engineer who takes ownership of delivering high-quality software and is comfortable working across design, development, testing and production support.

You should be able to communicate technical concepts clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders and have a strong focus on quality, maintainability, security, reliability and continuous improvement.

Candidates operating at L4/L5 level will be particularly attractive, with evidence of technical leadership, architectural decision-making, mentoring and ownership of complex backend solutions.
