Job Description - Lead Developer

Development Lead (PHP)

Location: Hybrid (Wakefield office, once a week)

Salary: £60,000 – £75,000 + bonus opportunities

Are you ready to become a trusted technical voice for clients and a driving force within a talented web team? My client are looking for a Team Leader (PHP) to join their growing consultancy. You’ll guide technical decisions, champion best practices, and help them to deliver exceptional solutions across a wide range of bespoke web applications.

What You’ll Do:

Lead client meetings and calls with clarity, confidence, and technical insight
Deeply understand client systems, recommending performance and reliability improvements
Stay hands-on with development work (JavaScript, PHP, React)
Contribute to presales, scope technical solutions, and shape proposals
Collaborate with project managers to prioritise and deliver effectively
Mentor and support your team with code reviews, 1:1s, and career guidance
Drive high standards in code quality, maintainability, and performance
Use your dedicated L&D time to explore emerging tech (e.g., AI, cloud tools)

What You’ll Bring

Strong web development experience with JavaScript, PHP, and React
Proven ability to assess and improve large-scale, business-critical applications
Excellent client communication and stakeholder management skills
Experience leading or mentoring developers in a technical team
Commitment to clean, high-performing code
Skilled in Git, Agile and/or Waterfall workflows
Excellent problem-solving, planning, and communication skills

Nice to have:

Experience in a software consultancy environment
Familiarity with cloud services, especially AWS
