Lead Platform Data Engineer

Our client is a globally recognised news organisation, renowned for its groundbreaking independent journalism and award-winning digital products. They are currently seeking a Lead Platform Data Engineer to join their Tech & Data team based in London. This role offers the opportunity to work within an organisation that values data as a critical asset for informing business decisions and driving performance. You will be at the forefront of designing, implementing, and maintaining the core data technology infrastructure that enables smarter decision-making.

What you'll do:

As a Lead Platform Data Engineer, your role will be pivotal in shaping the technical direction of the team. You'll work closely with architects, product managers, and stakeholders, providing technical knowledge to support the team and guide their work. Your expertise will be crucial in building features and capabilities to support colleagues in creating great things with data. You'll also oversee the maintenance of a lakehouse on Google Cloud Platform with BigQuery at its core.

• Lead the data engineering and GCP cloud engineering practice across the organisation.
• Coach and mentor a team of data engineers.
• Build and maintain the data ecosystem, ensuring the health of the platform and addressing vulnerabilities.
• Deliver operations and orchestration for all things data, specifically on Airflow, Cloud Composer.
• Monitor and manage costs for all tooling, identifying cost management and cost saving opportunities.
• Champion adoption of standards and best practices for cloud and data engineering.

What you bring:

As our ideal candidate for the Lead Platform Data Engineer position, you bring deep knowledge of cloud infrastructure and large-scale analytics platforms. Your experience with Google Cloud Platform (GCP) and BigQuery will be highly valued. You have proven ability to design and deliver solutions on key technologies that drive data. Your understanding of operational concerns such as security & networks, site reliability, developer experience, costs & budgets sets you apart from others. Your excellent communication skills enable you to effectively collaborate with various stakeholders.

• Deep knowledge of cloud infrastructure and large scale analytics platforms. Experience with GCP and BigQuery preferred.
• Ability to design and deliver solutions on technologies that drive data such as Google Cloud Platform: BigQuery, Kubernetes; Python, Airflow, & DBT; CI/CD & Terraform.
• Understanding of several operational concerns including Security & Networks, Site Reliability, Developer Experience, Costs & Budgets.
• Working knowledge of BigQuery Transfers? Fivetran would be a plus.
• Excellent communication skills.
• Ability to balance personal delivery with team delivery.
