Lead Software Engineer – C++ / Robotics
Portsmouth | £75,000 + Benefits | Permanent | Hybrid – 4 days onsite
We’re working with an established international engineering organisation looking for an experienced Lead Software Engineer / Software Technical Lead to join a growing team developing advanced underwater robotic systems.
This is a senior technical role combining software architecture, technical leadership and project delivery. You’ll take ownership of software across complex engineering projects, working with multidisciplinary teams from initial requirements and architecture through development, integration and delivery.
What You’ll Be Doing
* Taking technical ownership of software across complex engineering projects
* Defining software architectures for integrated systems
* Translating system requirements into robust software solutions
* Leading and coordinating software and multidisciplinary engineering teams
* Working across embedded, application and system-level software
* Supporting software/hardware integration, testing and delivery
* Ensuring appropriate software quality, safety and engineering standards
* Mentoring engineers and helping improve development practices
What We’re Looking For
* Experience in Senior, Lead or Principal Software Engineering roles
* Software architecture and system design experience
* Experience technically leading software engineers or multidisciplinary teams
* Strong software engineering background, ideally including C++
* Experience with embedded, real-time or hardware-integrated systems
* Experience developing system and software requirements
* Strong understanding of modern software engineering practices
* Relevant engineering/software degree or equivalent experience
Technical Environment
The environment includes technologies such as C++, Python, Linux, Windows, Docker, TCP/IP, UDP, WebSockets and SQL, alongside real-time systems, control software and hardware integration.
Direct robotics experience isn’t essential. We’re also interested in people from defence, marine, aerospace, automotive, autonomous systems, industrial automation, instrumentation or other complex engineering environments.
