Job title: Lead Technnical Underwriter- Liability

Salary: £65,000

Location: Berkshire or Remote with occasional office travel

PURPOSE OF ROLE

Lawes is recruiting on behalf of a client seeking a seasoned Lead Technical Underwriter with expertise in Liability. This role will define and lead underwriting strategy, governance, and technical standards, ensuring profitability, competitiveness, and regulatory compliance across the Liability portfolio.

RESPONSIBILITIES

• Set and manage technical strategy, underwriting frameworks, and guidelines for the Liability line
• Serve as lead referral point for complex Liability risks, providing authoritative guidance
• Propose and implement pricing models, product changes, and underwriting criteria to support commercial objectives
• Monitor portfolio trends and recommend actions to optimise performance
• Maintain awareness of market conditions, regulatory changes, and competitor activity to inform underwriting decisions
• Establish and enforce underwriting controls, procedures, and authority levels
• Collaborate with senior stakeholders to shape product and solution development
• Deliver technical training and support internal knowledge-sharing initiatives
• Lead and contribute to key underwriting projects and process improvements
• Build strong working relationships with internal departments and broker networks
• Provide cover for senior leaders when required

DAY-TO-DAY

• Advise and support underwriters with technical guidance on Liability risks
• Assess and approve high-value and complex cases
• Track and report on portfolio performance, advising on underwriting improvements
• Work with cross-functional teams on product development and enhancement
• Ensure compliance with internal and regulatory standards
• Lead training sessions and provide mentoring
• Contribute to drafting and refining underwriting policies and governance documents

EXPERIENCE

• Significant Liability underwriting experience, including technical governance and pricing
• Background in both trading environments and central underwriting functions
• Strong understanding of risk exposures across industrial sectors
• Proven ability to draft underwriting procedures and guidelines
• Familiarity with key insurance financial metrics (COR, NELR, etc.)
