Team/Role Overview:
Citi's Legal Department in Belfast is a team of approximately 130 staff, covering a range of products and services across Citi's Europe Middle East and Africa region, support and advice to many business areas within Citi. An opportunity has arisen in the Belfast Markets Legal Department for a legal negotiator role, supporting the Equities product within Citi's wider Markets Business.
This role will involve working closely with Citi's external clients, Citi Sales, Regional and Global Product Heads for the respective business line and Citi Product Legal Counsel in negotiating, reviewing and analyzing legal documentation and drafting, negotiating, coordinating, implementing and execution of a variety of Master Trading Documentation including, but not limited to, ISDA Master Agreements, Credit Support Annexes, GMRA, GMSLA, amendments and various ancillary documentation (e.g. guarantees and NDAs) across a wide range of counterparty types, and in compliance with Citi's policies and procedures.

What you'll do:
  • Negotiate and review legal agreements with internal/external customers to reach agreement on the contents of Citi's legal documentation and learn the documentation requirements for different products.
  • Liaise with internal businesses and global legal teams, in connection with the negotiation of legal agreements in the relevant business area.
  • Convey strong commercial awareness and understanding of the relevant desk's priorities by ensuring prioritization of file load is aligned with overall desk goals.
  • Work closely with stakeholders to manage expectations and ensure documentation is in place ahead of regulatory or business deadlines, where required.
  • Interpret key commercial concepts from an array of trading agreements, accounting for the necessary regulatory and/or jurisdictional changes where required.
  • Understand how associated risks differ depending on product and documentation envisaged in relevant jurisdiction(s) and impact of applicable regulations on the business area and ensure that agreements meet with such regulatory requirements.
  • Ensure Citi's internal and regulatory policies are maintained, and where deviations are necessary, ensuring appropriate legal, risk and / or business approvals are obtained.
  • Maintain key governance and control checks are implemented during documentation process; proactively identify and escalate issues within the relevant business.
What we'll need from you
  • Bachelors/University degree or equivalent experience of negotiating commercial contracts
  • Experience working in corporate legal department, law firm, financial services, consulting, technology firm or related industry is advantageous but not essential
  • Must have effective organizational and project management skills, attention to detail, exceptional verbal communication and listening skills
  • Knowledge of legal customs, practices and understanding of the financial services industry
  • Awareness of the impact of core regulation on the derivatives markets and underlying documentation advantageous
  • Working knowledge in the negotiation Industry standard Master Agreements (e.g. ISDA) and other agreement types mentioned above is desirable.
  • Ability to effectively organize own workload meeting key milestones and to work autonomously.
