Job Description - Legal Trustee


Role Summary 


  1. Scrutinising board papers 

  1. Leading discussions 

  1. Focusing on key issues 

  1. Providing guidance on new initiatives 

  1. Other issues in which the trustee has special expertise 

  1. Understand the post is voluntary 

 

Main roles of the Secretary Trustee 


  1. To ensure that the organisation complies with its governing document, charity law, company law and any other relevant legislation or regulations 

  1. To ensure that the organisation pursues its objects as defined in its governing document 

  1. To ensure the organisation uses its resources exclusively in pursuance of its objects: the charity must not spend money on activities which are not included in its own objects, no matter how worthwhile or charitable those activities are 

  1. To contribute actively to the board of trustees' role in giving firm strategic direction to the organisation, setting overall policy, defining goals and setting targets and evaluating performance against agreed targets. 

  1. To safeguard the good name and values of the organisation 

  1. To ensure the effective and efficient administration of the organisation 

  1. To ensure the financial stability of the organisation 

  1. To protect and manage the property of the charity and to ensure the proper investment of the charity's funds 

  1. If the charity employs staff, to appoint the chief executive officer and monitor his/her performance 

 

Person Specification  


  1. Commitment to the organisation 

  1. Willingness to devote the necessary time and effort 

  1. Strategic vision 

  1. Good, independent judgement 

  1. Ability to think creatively 

  1. Willingness to speak their mind 

  1. Understanding and acceptance of the legal duties, responsibilities and liabilities of trusteeship 

  1. Ability to work effectively as a member of a team 

 

Time Commitment  


  1. The Board meets at least 4 times a year and is expected to be available for at least 3 in a year , if unable to attend they must make arrangements 
  1. Attendance at award meetings or fundraising meetings is optional
