Life Science Underwriting Leader

IPS Group is working closely with a highly regarded Global Insurer who are currently looking to hire a Life Science Underwriting Lead which can be based in either Birmingham or Manchester.

This is a great opportunity to step into a senior position within this global Commercial Insurer which has recently rebranded from Mid-Market and undergone some positive restructuring.

This role carries full responsibility for managing and developing the portfolio, setting strategy, and ensuring a market-leading proposition across casualty, property, and cyber lines of business.
The book is predominantly UK and Multinational business (with just a small international element) and covers the full supply chain – from service companies and suppliers, through to manufacturers, pharma, and medical devices.

The role has P&L responsibility within a matrix setup, and you would be expected to take ownership of proposition development, pushing forward growth initiatives, and maintaining strong broker and client relationships.

A key aspect of the role is leadership, overseeing a team of underwriters across multiple locations, ensuring talent development, coaching, and succession planning. The position also requires significant broker and market engagement, driving new business, retention, and raising the organisation’s profile within the sector.

You must be able to bring technical underwriting expertise in Life Science and Health Tech, with the ability to manage referrals at a senior level and shape underwriting appetite and strategy. Strong experience in portfolio management, financial planning, and execution is essential, along with the capability to drive performance against business plans.
