Job Description - Locum Clinical Coding & Data Quality Supervisor
Position: Clinical Coding & Data Quality Supervisor Employment Type: Contract (3 Months Initial, Extension Potential) Location: Remote / Work from Home (Croydon Healthcare Services)Role Summary
Lead clinical coding operations and data quality initiatives while directly translating complex medical records into standardized coding formats (ICD-10 and OPCS-4). This position balances high-level supervision-mentoring staff, managing PDRs, and resolving complex coding queries-with hands-on extraction and auditing. You will work closely with departmental leadership to align coding accuracy with Trust Business Plans, SUS PbR processes, and national Data Security and Protection (DSP) standards.
Core Responsibilities
Team Supervision & Development: Mentor Clinical Coders and Data Quality Officers, oversee annual Performance Developmental Reviews (PDRs), set individual objectives, and establish structured personal development plans. Coding Execution & Accuracy: Extract and translate clinical information from physical notes, electronic discharge summaries, and Trust systems into accurate ICD-10 and OPCS-4 codes in compliance with national standards. Data Quality & Audit Support: Assist the Audit Manager with comprehensive coding audits, Information Governance/DSP toolkit compliance, and resolving data quality issues flagged via dashboards, data warehouses, or support tickets. Outpatient & Specialty Engagement: Collaborate with clinical and non-clinical teams to optimize outpatient procedure capturing, design updated outcome forms, and educate staff on correct recording pathways. Process & Workflow Improvement: Identify training gaps through random validation checks, promote efficient data capture practices, and ensure timely entry onto the Trust's PAS to meet strict national financial flow deadlines.Candidate Profile
Qualifications & Experience
Essential: Accredited Clinical Coder (ACC) status with substantial post-qualification experience (5+ years across diverse specialties desired). Education: Degree-level qualification or equivalent (a background in Science or Medicine is highly desirable). Expertise: Deep knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, physiology, national coding rules, and confidentiality legislation.Key Competencies
Strong leadership capabilities to guide junior coders, manage high-pressure deadlines, and drive team performance. In-depth understanding of Data Quality frameworks, HRGs, and NHS financial flows. Sharp analytical, communication, and keying skills with a solution-oriented mindset.
