The Opportunity
Contek Recruitment Solutions is representing an exciting and rapidly expanding engineering and technology business based in Bermondsey, South London, in the search for an experienced Technician – Machinist.
This is a particularly exciting opportunity to join a forward-thinking business developing next-generation synthetic fuel technology, with the ambition to help transform the future of energy.
Having recently featured on BBC News, the business has experienced significant growth and currently employs approximately 60 people, with plans to double its workforce to around 120 by the first quarter of next year.
With substantial investment being made into a brand-new manufacturing facility and high-end machinery, this is an opportunity to join at an important stage of the company's development.
Importantly, this is not a traditional production or subcontract machining role.
You'll be working in a highly varied engineering and R&D environment, producing everything from prototype components and test rigs through to full-scale assemblies. You'll also have the opportunity to contribute ideas, solve engineering challenges and influence how things are manufactured.
The Role
As Technician – Machinist, you'll take responsibility for operating and maintaining a range of machining equipment, producing high-quality components and supporting wider engineering and development projects.
Your responsibilities will include:
*
Operating manual mills and lathes alongside CNC milling and turning machinery.
*
Setting, operating and programming CNC machinery, with Hurco WinMax experience particularly desirable.
*
Setting up and executing CAM programmes.
*
Verifying toolpaths and carrying out appropriate dry runs before machining.
*
Selecting suitable cutting tools and establishing appropriate feeds, speeds and cutting rates.
*
Setting workholding, datums and work offsets.
*
Machining a variety of materials, including alloy steels and plastics.
*
Carrying out component inspection using micrometers, bore gauges, pin gauges, dial test indicators, digital verniers and other measuring equipment.
*
Taking ownership of component quality, identifying issues and carrying out rework where necessary.
*
Performing general machine checks and preventative maintenance to support equipment longevity.
*
Supporting prototype development, test-rig construction and full-scale engineering builds.
*
Assisting with equipment assembly and practical engineering projects outside of the machining environment.
*
Liaising with external contractors and helping coordinate the implementation of engineering solutions and facility requirements.
What We're Looking For
We're interested in more than someone who can simply set and operate a machine. The business is looking for an experienced, practical and inquisitive individual who enjoys engineering, problem-solving and getting involved in projects from the ground up.
Ideally, you'll have:
*
Approximately 4–5 years' experience within a machining, engineering, manufacturing or similar practical environment.
*
An engineering apprenticeship, relevant technical qualification or equivalent hands-on experience.
*
Experience operating both manual and CNC milling and turning machinery.
*
Experience with CAM software and CNC toolpath verification.
*
A good understanding of workholding, tooling, feeds, speeds and machining techniques.
*
Strong inspection and measurement skills.
*
Experience working with different materials and machining requirements.
*
A flexible approach and willingness to get involved in wider engineering and assembly activities.
*
The confidence to identify problems, suggest improvements and develop practical solutions.
Additional experience with CNC laser cutters and pipe bending machinery would be advantageous.
Personality and approach are particularly important. The business wants someone who takes ownership, uses their initiative and can act as a source of technical knowledge within a growing engineering team.
An interest in personal engineering projects, building equipment, fabrication or general hands-on tinkering would be particularly welcomed.
What's on Offer?
- £40,000–£60,000 annual salary, depending on experience.
- 40 hours per week on a standard day shift.
- Brand-new manufacturing facility with significant investment in high-end machinery.
- £6,000 per year additional relocation support to help with living closer to the HQ.
- Extensive relocation assistance.
- Private health insurance.
- Unlimited annual leave.
- The opportunity to join a rapidly expanding engineering and technology business.
- The chance to contribute to the development of innovative technology with the potential to change the future of energy.
Why Consider This Opportunity?
If you're a machinist who enjoys variety, technical challenges and seeing the bigger picture behind the components you're producing, this could be a refreshing change from conventional manufacturing environments.
You'll have the opportunity to work alongside an ambitious engineering team, use brand-new equipment and play an active role in developing technology from initial concepts and prototypes through to full-scale systems.
